With not much skiable natural snow in the region, Ragged was a good choice for today. They had an excellent variety of terrain open across both mountains and excellent cover on all open trails. Trails that had been groomed soon before opening had a good surface right away, but other trails were a bit icy to start the day. Things softened up throughout the day, but there will still ice patches on many trails. The mountain was crowded and there was usually a line of 1-2 minutes on the Spear Mountain Quad, 2-3 minutes on the Summit Express, and 2-3 minutes on the Barnyard Triple. However, the trails spread out the crowds well and it was never too much of a madhouse on the way down. It was a warm day and temperatures stayed in the upper thirties throughout most of the day with little wind. It’s amazing how quick the high speed lifts will get you to the top of either mountain (less than 5 min each) which means you can get many, many runs in during a full day. Birches remains one of my favorites there with a good pitch and a fun double fall line. My hand must’ve been shaky today because many photos are blurry, sorry about that.
