I don't think we've put this list together on SJ: What can you add?

State:
MA:
MDC (became DCR): Blue Hills (leased out)
Wachusett (leased out)

NH
Cannon
Sunapee (leased out)

NY:
Belleayre
Gore
Whiteface

County:
NH: Belknap: Gunstock

City:
NH: Franklin: Veterans Memorial Ski Area
NH: Lebanon: Storrs Hill (heavily funded by the city, but not owned by the city)
NH: Manchester: McIntyre

Comments

  • Searchmont in Ontario Canada I believe is a co-op of some sort with the city of Sault Ste. Marie
  • Not sure what you are looking for, ski area that was developed by the state then leased out?  Or ski area on leased land.  If it's the latter most ski areas in VT have part, in some cases most, of their development on leased land.

ME: Camden Snowbowl - owned and operated by town of Camden.

VT: Hard'Ack is a part of the St. Albans city rec department

NY: Newcomb and Indian Lake are both town operated
Saranac Lake: Mt. Pisgah Rec center (ski tow and slopes) also town owned and operated

  • Campgaw - Bergen County NJ (leased out and run by Blue Hills group).
  • Laurel Mountain, PA. Owned by the State of Pennsylvania and leased to the same group that runs Seven Springs.
Ski Denton, PA. Owned by the state. Currently closed but in the planning stages for a revitalization similar to what the state did for Laurel Mountain.

    A good question:

My intent was any of the following:
    1. A ski area developed by a state/county/city that is either run by that entity or leased by that entity to a 3rd party
    2. A ski area that was developed and operated privately that was taken over by a state/county/city

I did not intend to include a privately developed ski area that has a long term land usage permit/lease with either a state or national forest.
  • Dynamite Hill, Chestertown, NY
Schroon Lake Ski Tow, Schroon Lake, NY

Both are town owned and operated.
  • Victor Constant Ski Area, West Point, NY
    Federal owned and operated
  • Living Memorial in Brattleboro. Owned by the town, run by a nonprofit.

For better or worse, I'm going to leave the summary to the NE United States.  Here is update #1:

    Federal Government:
NY: West Point; Victor Constant Ski Area

    State:
    MA:
MDC (became DCR): Blue Hills (leased out)
    Wachusett (leased out)

    NH:
    Cannon
    Sunapee (leased out)

    NY:
    Belleayre
    Gore
    Whiteface

    PA:
Laurel Mountain (leased out and run by 3rd party)
Ski Denton (Owned by PA, but not currently operating).

    County:
    NH: Belknap: Gunstock
NJ: Bergen County: Campgaw (leased out and run by 3rd party)

    City/Town:
MA: Pittsfield: Osceola Park Rope Tow
    ME: Camden: Camden Snowbowl
    NH: Wolfeboro: Abenaki
NH: Franklin: Veterans Memorial Ski Area
NH: Lebanon: Storrs Hill (heavily funded by the city, but not owned by the city)
NH: Manchester: McIntyre (leased out and run by 3rd party) [updated as per remski's comment below]
    NY: Chestertown: Dynamite Hill, ,
    NY: Indian Lake: Indian Lake
    NY: Newcomb: Newcomb
    NY: Saranac Lake: Mt. Pisgah
NY: Schroon Lake:Schroon Lake Ski Tow
    VT: Brattleboro: Living Memorial
    VT: St. Albans: Hard'Ack

    Got more?
  • Seems to me some of those Maine tows must be on municipally owned property, but am not sure.  There are certainly enough of them, odds are that a few would be.

  • I believe that Powderhouse Hill in South Berwick, ME is town owned.
  • For the most part, the county and state ones are significant ski areas.

The town areas are primarily small and marginal operations with only Camden and McIntyre having more than  surface lifts.
  • McIntyre is leased out by the city.

If we're going with western ones the biggest has got to be Winter Park. Owned by the city of Denver. Now operated by Alterra. I forget the details but I'm pretty sure Denver still owns the place, they also ran it until they made a deal with intrawest during their glory years.
  • Haystack is on a ground lease from the town of Wilmington.

Mount Snow and Bromley are on National Forest Land if that counts?

So neither Mt. Snow nor Haystack is on this list.
