Yesterday was a fantastic day of skiing at Cannon! Good conditions, pleasant weather, and low crowds made for one of the best ski days of my season so far.
Only three trails were closed; those being Bypass, DJ’s Tramline and Baron’s Run (closed for a race). All lifts were running except for the tram and the Brookside and Eagle Cliff triples, though I’m unsure if the Valar T-Bar was open to the public or not. The snow was mostly nice packed powder over a base that was firm but rarely icy. Some of the Front Five were getting skied off in the afternoon but other groomers held up well. A handful of mid- and lower-mountain trails had seen recent snowmaking; some still had whales while others had been groomed out and had frozen granular snow. The weather was sunny except for the occasional cloud at the summit and there was no wind at all. Temperatures were in the low to mid 30s but felt warmer due to the sun (one of the lifties at Cannonball was in short sleeves!), and the snow became a little wet and grabby at the lowest elevations. It felt relatively busy for a weekday with 1-2 minute lines at the Peabody Express and Cannonball lifts in the morning, although the Mittersill Double was almost empty. No lines for any lift in the afternoon.
Cannon switched to RFID ticketing this year, and there was a bit of a wait to get a card in the morning apparently due to issues with the new technology. The mountain doesn’t have RFID gates yet, and my ticket was only scanned once in the entire day.
While I had skied Cannon before, yesterday was my first time checking out Mittersill. I enjoyed its uncrowded, old-school vibe as well as the absence of any crowds. North Slope feels quite separated from the rest of the area (requiring a short hike out if you go all the way to the bottom) and definitely has an abandoned feel to it, with no grooming, natural snow and vegetation poking through. As mentioned, a race was being held on Baron’s Run but there was a crossing guard enabling you to reach Coyote Crossing from the Access Trail in order to return to the Peabody area.
Overall, it was a superb day and I hope these great conditions continue for a while!
