Private member only ski areas

Because of my grandson's 5th grade free ski passport this year includes the Otsego Club (supposedly oldest ski club in country 1939) I will have the opportunity to ski the private/members only ski area.

Not that I expect to find any spectacular terrain or anything but it's kinda like a boarder getting to ride MRG/Alta/DV(not quite) and a chance to ride some Poma/Telecar/ Car Savio/ Miner Denver lifts. We had a good thread on these lift manufacturers.

http://www.snowjournal.com/discussion/62/ciscokid-where-was-i-what-kind-of-lift-is-this-5-26-15/p1

All I can find for private-members only list is Yellowstone, Hermitage, Holimont and Greylock in the states, please correct me and add to list.

This article I found on Ontario ski clubs shows how strong they are there .

http://skicanadamag.com/features/members-only

I have had the opportunity to golf a few private courses but never a private ski area.

Who has skied a private area without being a member? ( iirc Dr Jeff skied Hermitage, anyone else?)

Wasn't Roundtop private for a while?

Edited: That sounds cool. Kinda depends on how you define a private club . I've skied Hermitage VT a couple times, Mt Greylock MA, Pinnacle ME, Red Hill Outing Club NH. I contacted all of these ahead of time and didn't just show up. Probably not required at Pinnacle and perhaps Red Hill. I count all these as you join as a yearly member. So I joined all but Hermitage. Lyndon, Storrs & Prospect may count too, I don't remember their rules.

Roundtop became Bear Creek/Hawk Inn. It was closed for a while. It may have reopened last year as Plymouth Notch but I have no first nor 2nd hand reports from anyone. Sonneberg/Twinfarms is a luxury inn with private cottages. All inclusive $1450 to $3633 pp per night. They have no lifts. Only snowcat service. Not really a club.
I was just this night reading a ski ad magazine and Nansen Ski Club of NH 1872 claims to be the oldest continuously operated ski club in America. Nordic. Not the first time I've heard the name but I've never been up there. http://skinansen.com/

Lakeridge, CT is a residential gated community. Swimming, kayaking, tennis etc. So you need to own there or be the guest of an owner.

I know we have had several Haystack/ Hermitage threads and know Haystack was public, was lost and resurrected as a private club.

I would like to keep it to areas that offer downhill lift served( chair plus surface also ok) skiing and were started as a private club with their one and only one mountain. Ones that allow public as a guest of a member or a public weekday / limited basis ok.

I guess based on some research Otsego club was formed in 1939, was privately owned ski hill called Hidden Valley for several decades, sold to a company in 2006,(Osprey which allowed some public ski days around 5 years ago)and bought back by several members.

I wonder if the 1965 or '66 (50 yr old) Telecar doubles have been replaced

Fairly wide for Mich( nothing tall here)
Hey Rick Bolger, they named a ridge after you next to the one they named for me!

For $20 my grandsons 5th grade passport gets him in free and I have to pay the members rate of $82 which was confirmed via email.( they will let my 8 year old grandson in as a guest for $5!)image :)]

I'm a member of Ski Venture, NY, in Glenville, private club, but very affordable and guests can check it out for free once!

We had a thread on this on SJ1.0.

The general conclusion we reached was that the model seems to work for small areas, such as Ski Venture, Greylock and a bunch of others.  However, it has failed long term with larger areas with the exception of Yellowstone and perhaps now, the Hermitage.

    Among the larger areas that have failed: Round Top, VT;

Clubs that are now public areas: Windham, NY; Blandford, MA

Perhaps our SJ Community can fill in so others.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Yellowstone had pretty rough going?

That's what I heard too, but as far as I know, they are still operating.

Concord Club in WNY was owned by Kissing Bridge. It was members only and closed a while ago. Not on NELSAP. Go north on Poverty Hill Road and you can find the old trails on Google.

We used to ski Holimont for a day back in the 80's when they had their winter carnival. They were open to the public back then for that one day.  Crossed the street to pick up the chair closest to town, skied for the day and then took the power line back to the Valley once the day was over.

The t-bar ride I have a YouTube link to waaaaay back to at the beginning of SnowJournal 2.0 is indeed the Cazenovia Ski Club!

Another private area near Syracuse is the Skaneateles Ski Club. It's just north of Otisco Lake, the first of the Finger Lakes, and is 350 vertical feet of solid blue square runs served by a Hall t-bar. Great little place!

Thanks for bringing up Homestead (Mi) ski_it, I decided to re watch my video from 2/24/13 and snap a few pics non ausie style and hijack my own thread.

Well ski_it ( and Becca) tackled Plymouth Notch/ Round Top handily last week. I am so jealous of that private country club experience that I am setting a goal of getting to the since 1939 private Otsego Club here in Michigan next year. Once again I had clearance via email to ski there this year and failed to make it a priority to get a private historic ski area experience.

I just hope they will have the same offer next year when my 9 year old grandson enters 5th grade. I missed out 3 times now.

Skaneateles Ski Club just south of Marcellus, NY (a Syracuse suburb) is a private ski hill. 300+ vertical feet and an 1,800 ft Hall t-bar.

    Sounds rather glorious.

Oh, I should add: I've skied it back in 1987! Great intermediate skiing.

Go for it Cisco. I've skied 5-6 of them. There may be a couple more around these parts I could get on, idk. Totally different vibe. Just do it!!
Then again some of the small places can have a similar feel
