Dartmouth Skiway 2/20/2016

Powder day at Dartmouth! Both mountains were open and everything had about 5 inches of new powder on it. There were about four top to bottom runs open on Winslow and three on Holt’s. Nothing was groomed because the snow had fallen after the groomer made its pass. Upper John Meck and Liftline Glades were open with all natural snow and they skied great. Temperatures were in the 30s and low 40s throughout the day and it was overcast in morning and afternoon, but very sunny mid-day. In the morning the mountain was relatively crowded with ski racers, but it was almost deserted in the afternoon. There was race training taking place on Thomas and Worden’s, but the trails remained open to the general public. It was the perfect day to ski Dartmouth and the conditions were amazing, especially for this season.

Wow!  I didn’t think anyone had skiable glades.  Nice report.

Dartmouth is a great option during President’s Vacation week and after new snow, good choice! Been a few years since I have been there, great mid-sized area and it is especially nice after a storm as they don’t groom the place flat, surprising for a hill that owes its operations to a ski racing program. Coverage looks good, nice!

The glades skied great! There was a good amount of base below the powder, so I didn’t bottom out on turns.

Jay has quite a few open. Smuggs has a few as well. I skied MRG yesterday and Fall Line, Upper Glade, Lower Glade, Gazelle Glade, and Lower Paradise were all open. Some tracks were going off the map but I don’t think there is enough base depth to trust off map woods. It feels like late December/early January right now… just one storm away from everything opening up quite nicely. 

All that said, I also assumed no skiable glades in NH. But those Liftline Glades at Dartmouth are not a good benchmark for glade skiing in New Hampshire. Those glades are very low angle and very wide open, all very large hard woods with wide spacing. It would take less snow to open those than say something like a non-gladed Middle Hardscrabble at Cannon.
