Others suggested were not under 25 miles (measured from city center).

    So the rules are:
    - From the city center?
    - Driving distances (not as the crow flies)?

    What else?

    Blue Hills and Cambridge, MA???

Is this another BH? Because Boston is between Cambridge and BH

Blue Hills is within 25 miles of both of those cities.

Well this thread has gone off the rails, but, does it matter? ;)

If the definition of "within" is really, "within," and within is indeed an absolute, virtually none of these qualify based on the population threshold.

    None of the B-Hills qualify!

Buck Hill is not within the Minneapolis city limits, it is within Burnsville.

Blue Hills is not within the Boston city limits.

Boyce Park is not within the Pittsburgh city limits.

McIntyre is really quite an oddball. Given the parameters, McIntyre is the only operational lift-served ski area within city limits of a major city (100,000+ population)

There is one other I can find within a major city, Ruby Hill Rail Yard has snowmaking and free rental equipment but no lift.

Hi gang: This is supposed to be fun. When it was apparent that the list of cities with ski areas was exceedingly small, I extended it to 25 miles - but you're right: I didn't explain the 25 miles well.

Keep in mind, after someone's 25 miles came out closer to 50, I checked them all before I added them. For Cleveland, OH as the starting point, I looked at the routes and if the shortest recommended route was over 25 miles, I excluded it.

Who said it wasn't fun? I learned something, namely, McIntyre is unique! ;)

If you look at google maps it really is unusual, within the city limits. Good fun looking at all these!

Please define "city center". Are we going with the commercial, cultural, historical, political or geographical definition?

I can't speak to all of the others, but Hilltop and Alyeska are both operational lift-served ski areas within the city limits of Anchorage Alaska (population = 294,356)

Looks like under 25 miles, but anyway. Quibbling...

It certainly does look like less. Remember to have your route set to the shortest distance, not shortest time when figuring this out.

Brandywine/Boston Mills is listed under Cleveland. The summary is organized from most populous city to least populace.
  • Strike Boyce Park. It is about 15 miles outside the city limits in Monroeville population about 28,000.

You are correct. It was confusing because the address is in Pittsburgh. Why is that?
Boyce Park is an Allegheny County Park. Pittsburgh is the County Seat. Most County offices are in Pittsburgh in the aptly named City/County Building. Actually, I believe Boyce Park is in Plum Borough but that's still in Allegheny County.

Indeed they are, but hardly city-ish. McIntyre is unique in that respect

Even by that definition Pat's Peak is under 25 miles from Manchester, NH

Well your google maps must be broken!! :p :p

I guess I'm just a little better at tweaking back road-routes to find the shortest distance. I didn't just pick a route the Google maps offered, I found the shortest set of turns. Kind of a hobby of mine while driving around. Anyway, obviously your map is the authority so Pats is out (sorry Pats :'( ) Just remind me never to take a walk with you. I hate going the unnecessarily long way!

I get 24.9 without even tweaking it.
  • The shortest route I could find on Bing got me 24.8, so I will back up Pat's Peak as qualifying.

    Inside city limits:
Did anyone mention Wheeling, WV - Oglebay Park ski area? This is a small (168' vertical), but legit area with a triple chair and snowmaking.

Not US, but Calgary, AB - Canada Olympic Park (significant suburban ski area with multiple chair lifts, ski jumps and focus on terrain parks).
According to wikipedia, Wheeling's population is just under 30K.

We have still missed a few. I just tripped over:

Buffalo, NY (81): Buffalo Ski Club
Providence, RI (137) Diamond Hill (lost)
Providence, RI (137) Ski Valley (lost)
Springfield, MA (165): Mt. Tom (lost)
    Hartford, CT (222): Mt. Southington
    Hartford, CT (222): Powder Ridge
    Hartford, CT (222): Ski Sundown

Suspect there are a few others near Buffalo, NY (81) - probably Rochester, NY (110) also.

I cut the corners on the curves and got 24.7

Oops. Just realized Wheeling doesn't fit the definition of 100k city per OP. The MSA (metro statistical area) of Wheeling is ~150k, but that opens another can of worms about cities.

No can of worms. If someone want to open that thread, go for it!

I'll do another summary a bit later, but a few notes:

Albany, NY is just under 100K population.

My google read on Providence to Yawgoo is 26.4 miles.

Another addition: Yonkers, NY (103): Same as NYC:
