In many ways it was surprisingly the same. Historian here in northern NJ just published an article in our local newspaper, here are a couple of very interesting excerpts:

Quarantine

Efforts taken in 1918 to check the spreading of the epidemic sound just like today. For an article that appeared in the Herald it was reported that “Quarantine strictly observed — Every precaution being Taken to Curb the Disease.” From an Order issued by the Board of Health that “all churches Sunday Schools, libraries, theatres, moving picture houses, dance halls, pool rooms, lodge rooms, saloons, hotel bars, soda fountains, and all other places where numbers of people congregate be closed.”

Temporary hospitals & morgues, healthcare workers at risk:

According to Franklin historian Joseph Bene, there were 561 cases of influenza in Franklin during the 1918 epidemic. The Neighborhood House, a building on Main Street, was used as a hospital and, Bene guesses, as a morgue as well. The New Jersey Zinc Co. sent nurses and doctors from Palmerton, Pa. to help care for the sick. One nurse, who helped care for the sick and fell victim to the epidemic herself, was Phyllis Treloar.

In Hamburg, while an exact number was not available, reportedly there were so many sick persons from the influenza that the Parish House of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church was used as a hospital. Members of the community served as volunteers to help care for the sick there.

Doctors working overtime:

In Newton, it was reported that the physicians were busy making 50-75 individual calls with a 24-hour period.

Her summary:

Looking back at the control efforts used in the 1918 influenza epidemic, it seems that some things never change. In 1918, the control efforts were limited to isolation, quarantine, good personal hygiene, use of disinfectants, and limitation of public gatherings.
