It's my son's favorite ski area in New England and he started skiing there in 2003 at age 3. For me it's second after Sugarloaf. I started skiing there in 1989 and have seen it struggle through bad times and good.

The mountain has phenomenal snow retention characteristics due to high elevation and latitude and fantastic Spring skiing. It's definitely another king of Spring. I would say 75% of my days there have been in March and April. All of these pictures are in March and April. Unfortunately it's very remote and I really doubt I would have had as many skier days there without Sugarloaf nearby for a reliable lodging base

This picture of Saddleback I posted above and here is of Saddleback being closed for 2 weeks already. Just look at how much snow still remains. I don't know of Saddleback being opened in May, but it wouldn't be hard to do.

I think the mountain was opened into May in the 1980's.

Great photos! I skied Saddleback twice, Fahrenheit temp at the base lodge was never a positive number. In full sunshine!

They are closed this Winter and April 18th will make five years of no operations. I'm not sure Saddleback will ever reopen. If the Berry's sell the lifts the place is done.

The family isn't pressed for money, so who knows what will happen.

This is why I don't ski at Sugarloaf during the Winter as much. I was up there in 2009 for my son's birthday and it was bitterly cold. It's the coldest skiing I've done since 1989. Ironically the first time I skied Sugarloaf in December of 1989, it was -37F. The coldest skiing I've ever done.

1/16/09: -24F in Stratton and -35F at Sugarloaf summit.

These are the best conglomeration of Saddleback pics I have seen
(Then again there was that eclair eating t bar video or pics from 10 yrs ago or so at Saddleback if I recall correctly)

Nothing on Sugarloaf Today regarding Saddleback since 10/9 and there are alot of locals in that discussion.

Glad to see they plan to upgrade the Rangely Chair to a HSQ, this is badly needed. I just hope they can do it next year before reopening. At least they are waiting until next Fall to reopen. Don't rush and do things correctly.

I am very excited to hear this! I spend a lot of time in Rangeley snowmobiling and it will be great to be able to get some snowboarding in while up there too.

The sale price was not disclosed, but Shepard said Arctaris is making a significant investment that will result in the replacement of the antiquated Rangeley Double chairlift with a high-speed quad chair, installation of a new T-bar, modernization of the base lodge that will include a new kitchen and bathrooms on the third floor, expanded daycare and retail space, and new equipment to increase snowmaking capacity.

As with so many things falling through at SB over the last 5-years, "the fat lady has not sung yet". While I am somewhat optimistic, I am taking a more wait-and-see attitude before I start celebrating.

I agree Joshua. I got excited and posted before I finished reading the article and then realized it won't close until December. Still the quotes from the Berry Family seem much more promising then anything I have seen before. Hopefully this time it is for real.

While the death of a Hall t-bar is always sad one can take joy in its replacement being....another t-bar! 😆
