State’s high court denies motion in Belleayre Resort case ALBANY – The State Court of Appeals denied a motion by the Catskill Heritage Alliance for leave to appeal its decision regarding the Department of Environmental Conservation’s environmental review of the proposed Belleayre Resort. That effectively closes the avenues the Alliance has for challenging the permitting of the resort project in court. Alliance Chairwoman Kathy Nolan is “disappointed” since her group felt the environmental review of the project was insufficient. Their concerns include the state’s agreement to fund two new ski lifts adjacent to a new Crossroads Ventures hotel. “We don’t think the state should be putting those kinds of dollars – each lift would be at least $5 million – ski center ostensibly, but on a new footprint that would really serve the hotel that is being proposed by Crossroads Ventures,” she said. Nolan said they are also concerned that all the housing units proposed for the project would be unsupportable and would draw from other accommodations. She said the Catskill Heritage Alliance was never against the resort and not against economic development but said the development must be realistic and “must help our region instead of enriching developers at the expense of our environment, economy and taxpayers.

Highly doubt that the old Mueller double chair and Hall t-bar are salvageable after being inoperative for so many years....

Lots of good memories riding the Muller Double when it was at Jiminy Peak when I was 5 or 6 years old

this is what killed Tupper…long drawn out court cases. At some point these people need to realize that there is a balance between man and nature. Unless you want the Cats, and dacks completely man free unless its from the area they live in…

Balance is very important as people still live in the park areas.

However, Big Tupper went out twice before the current situation because the skiing is not worth the drive. The Tupper real estate development would still be a failure even without the lawsuits. Big Tupper will never be enough of a draw to support the development.

Belleayre is still just 2 hours from NYC metro. The Belleayre expansion should actually add something to the local economy and the delay has been horrible.

The State should not be spending money that will benefit the private venture. The true, existing local economy will die. The developers and other new money will be the only ones to make money if this actually goes through.

Kathy Nolan (referenced in the article) is on the Ulster County Legislature Cathy Nolan (wouldn’t know a tree from a ski) is in the State Assembly from District 37

That area needs a NEW hotel. There is no place decent to stay at near the mountain,

You are right, but in NYS this type of out of control spending has been going on for years. That’s why more people are moving out than in. I’m against it also, but I guess if it going to be done anyway, it might as well be for the betterment of skiing.

Balance is very important as people still live in the park areas.

Only similarity to Tupper is the state they share (though one could argue that Catskills and ADKs are worlds apart) and they are both ski areas.

Big tupper has always had problems with lack of snowmaking, and poor snow conditions. Plus you can drive 45 minutes to lake placid… I think it could be successful. I guess im jaded, as my camp is 20 minutes from Tupper.

I can’t wait for Belleayre to access Highmount. I think this would bring in a lot of business for the local area. ALL of the local hotels, rooming houses, etc…. need major updates too! A big chain hotel wouldn’t hurt either.
