Yes, that has to be it as we where heading east on Route 409 and saw a lot of trails on a peak to the south right past Route 39 and Cattaraugus Creek.Thanks for the new view and helping me find the mystery ski area.

It looks like those new trails, if that’s what they are, are on the steeper northwest side of the mountain. I used to think, looking at the topo of the old Bluemont, that a long flat stretch spoiled the skiability of the area. The northwest side looks much better, with a good 600 vertical feet.

Little digging found that the area along with 1200 ac is up for sale. Hmmmmmmm wonder why the trail clearing. It states right in the description of the sale as possible ski resort. "Entitlements in Place for Private Hunting, Fishing, Golf and Ski Resort Opportunity. 1200 acres of Pristine, secluded land of rolling hills in southern New York State. Previously the Bluemont Ski Are with extensive hunting grounds and on-site fishing. Entitled for a golf course, skiing and surrounding retail and residential development." http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/15514526/Bluemont-Ski-Area-Yorkshire-NY/

The only date in there is 2005– not sure how current it is anymore.

I can maybe shed some light on this, I was out for a weekend drive and my destination was Bluemont. There looked to be some logging equipment around the base area, they were clearing trees in areas that suggested none of it was ski area resurrection related (unfortunately!). Perhaps you were seeing these newly logged areas?

2005? Fuggetaboutit. As a matter of fact in the first image above, at a closer look you can see fresh clearing and disturbed ground toward the base of Sam’s red circle. In the newer image that area is grown back in, and the newer cuts appear above it. The 2005 article mentions two hills - and there is a decent-looking hill just to the west (Sam’s map) which could use the same base area.
