At least in Maine, the only ski area that I know that doesn't use wickets is Shawnee Peak.

Yeah I had to get tickets last weekend at Mt Snow because of the Epic amount of time it takes to get a pass out of them. And I was calling those tywrap thingys wickets...
And their wickets...er... tywraps aren't easy to use either....I'm tywrapped challenged without glasses on.

Yes, I was surprised to see that they switched to RFID this year. Probably because some people were cheating the system, as they rarely checked lift tickets.

When crafting Remontees-Mecaniques series, I usually try to take a picture of the ticket. And there have been a few times I have written that the ticket is a "souvenir," as the ski area is going to RFID the following season.

Not sure if it's obsolete (probably not), but - "geschmozzle". A race start, I thought it was only for cross-country races, where everyone starts at once in the same place. Usually in a big mob.
It's a late addition to this thread because I only thought of it while observing my wife's method of shuffling cards. I'm calling it the "geschmuffle".

Good one. Gemütlichkeit found its way into New England. I heard it used in the context of après ski where the instructors were tasked with schmoozing the guests in the late afternoon and evening with an eye on selling more beer!

I learned something to the effect of "Most people want to ski like this right away"... *Draw parallel lines in the snow with your pole*... "But first, we need to learn to make turns like this"... *Draw an S over the parallel lines to make a dollar sign*
