TomWhite Part of yesterday's snow report: Our lift contractor, Pfister Mtn Services has transported all the Quad upper terminal stanchion and bullwheel, plus comm line to the top and is working on installation there all weekend. Hope to ski with you this weekend! -Geoff Magic Mountain. Where skiing still has its soul.
ski_it “For those of you here this weekend, you saw our lift contractor Pfister Mountain Services working on the top of the Quad terminal welding and setting in place the top stanchion. The upper bullwheel is next to be set today. Then they have to do some emergency work in NH to get our friends at Whaleback's lift working again, before they are back to do lift tower bolt torqueing as installation rolls into spring for a Quad lift approved and ready to go for next fall.” -Geoff
ski_it Feb 29th Leap Saturday 51 of 51 trails which includes all labeled glades. 5 of 5 lifts packed powder, hard powder. 2-4” in last seven. 10-25F, no wind, mostly cloudy. All the ungroomed had moguls. Some trails were firmer than others. The ski report called it chalky in spots. Made it tough for this guys to get his tails around sometimes. Skier traffic was light. Lift lines at the Red built up to maybe 10 minutes but more often like 5. Most of the crowd was there for some kinda race for a club from CT. Geoff was directing the queue in the morning. We needed to use our ski show discount tickets & I don't think I ever skied on a Leap Day before, so Magic it was. So we go into the lodge and at the table next to us is a farmer & his young son from our hometown. He skis Magic alot & does backcountry as well. We met up with them on the hill & for lunch so we caught up a little. Raise vegetables if you want the winter off! Slide of Hans had some of the softer moguls. Witches was fun also. Upper Magician had a lot of rocks showing so bypassed that one. Went into some of the glades. Skied steep Goniff which was fun & Disappearing Act. But then little White Tiger turned out tighter and much harder than it looked at the top. I got stuck over a small cliff & I'm not too proud too admit I took my skis off to turn around rather than attempt to see if I can still do a 180° step turn. The new Double Diamond Pitch Black which currently starts below the last tower which you can see in that pic above with skull & crossbones. It has the same sign leading in. Danger Seen/Unseen hazards exists. Stumps, Rocks, Trees, Branches. Proceed at your own risk! It has all that and more. They forgot to mention ungroomed snow, unpadded lift towers, ice, small cliffs & old lift piers. Quite a few new tall stumps and rocks on the top section. But it held better powder than elsewhere so was kinda fun. To use a phrase from their report, probably the most technical skiing I've done in a while. And of course we ended our day with a tasty VT brew in the Black Line Tavern.
