Mount Airy Lodge. 40 years later that vocal tag "beautiful Mount Airy Lodge..." is still stuck in my head. :s

This tune is stuck in my head, 35 years later. As an ex NY'er, this commercial for the Nevele Hotel was played quite often in the 80's and 90's. Look at the rope tow for what looks like a very flat area.

If you saw the Nevele a bunch, you might've seen the commercial I did for Space Farms Zoo & Museum in the late 80s and early 90s. I bought the time through some lady who lived in a brownstone on Park Avenue. the process always felt like I was buying Monty Hall's hidden contents on Let's Make a Deal.

Probably going the same way as Grossingers. The customers for the Jewish Alps are mostly dead or living in warmer climates.

After the founder died it went downhill, I believe it passed to his sister (not sure) in some fashion, ultimately closed after a few years of benign neglect. Don't know if they still own it. I think this one could be brought back to life a lot easier than The Balsams.

Nevele founder was the same guy who cooked up Liberty Travel, which was ubiquitous in the New York metro area

When I lived in NYC, there was talk about casino gambling to save some of these resorts.

Played golf at the Nevele back in 2000 on our way up to Speculator for a reunion. IIRC $50 for a round which was strong for an average old course

You could see the Grossingers t-bar happily turning from Rt. 17! I remember spying it operating as I rode with the fam way back in 1984 as we drove to JFK airport to catch a flight to Switzerland for a ski vacations

I grew up in Bayside, Queens and the neighborhood really changed. In the 80's it was mostly Jewish neighbors. Mostly retired and starting to move to Florida or other warmer locations. When I left in 2006, it was nearly all Korean.

I imagine it was a similar situation in the rest of NYC. If the cliental for the Catskills resorts was mostly Jewish, the base demographic changed.

Ironic that you mentioned flying to Switzerland, because cheap vacations to other parts of the world didn't help.

Most of those places in the Catskills, including but not limited to, Grossinger's, the Nevele, Kutcher's, the Concord, etc. were hotel/resorts for which the skiing was a secondary amenity. The last few remnants of that culture are in places like the Woodstock Inn (Suicide Six) and Purity Resort (King Pine).

The "Jewish Alps scene" passed into history (as did their ski areas and golf courses) because of changes in American culture. PBS did a documentary on it that is well beyond the scope of a skiing history thread!

And demographic changes. Big decline in the Jewish population in NYC between 1950 and 2002. From 2,000,000 to 972,000 according to Wikipedia. Modern travel habits changed as you mentioned above. Why spend a lot of money vacationing in the Catskills, when for the same amount of money, the world is at you're feet.

The Catskills had various sections that were popular with specific nationalities/cultures. Purling/Round top catered to German families, East Durham was called the Irish Alps, Italians had the "Bocce Belt." There are still a few lingering resorts in those towns. All of these enclaves were smaller and not as well known as the "Jewish Alps" or "Borscht Belt" which tended to be the southern section, primarily Sullivan County. Fascinating history, plenty of well researched articles online.

I had a friend who stayed at the Nevele in 2003, mostly senior citizens and the room was old and in bad shape.

Speaking about resorts no longer in operation, my family was considering a vacation at Balsams Wilderness. Unfortunately we didn't go. I did ski there in March of 2008. Some of the coldest and windiest skiing I've ever done in March.
