Mt Snow Trip Reports 2020-2021

Interesting, Saturday is usually the busier weekend day. From the cams: Waterville's White Peaks summit line is much longer; Wildcat is about the same; both Ragged's slightly less; Sunday River doesn't show lines but trails seem busier. The holiday week could be making an impact. Does Bretton Woods still only have the golf course/X-country cam, or am I not searching properly for the ski area cam?

Per my daughter.... "great snow to hold a race on. Groomers did a decent job keeping the size of the death cookies not much larger than a dunkin dobuts munchkin at most. Hope it starts snowing again so me and my friends can get back into the trees again without worrying about skidding into a tree...."

Doesn't look like anything big on the horizon, so let's hope the snow globe starts shaking again for a few days in a row....

Saturday could get ugly as the weekly ticket availability report had things at the almost sold out status

02/18/2021 - got out on the Mt today after a week of doing other things and completing some projects. The change in conditions is certainly disappointing but there was no loss to the base. Went with the GS skis today - good call. Free Fall on NF was the best of that pod and the whole Mt. Exceptionally light feel to the crowd like a normal weekday - probably because many lifts were on line today. Sheave wheel replaced on Outpost this morning @ tower 3. Slalom training on Fallen Timbers but open to the public too. Hopefully a couple of inches tonight. Not worthy of a photo today.

2/19/2021 - I'd say Mt Snow faired better than expected with the snow fall quantity. 3" over night and I'd guess another 3 over the 8am-5pm period. Snow has stopped now. Problem was, it was light and fluffy and did not adhere well to the shiny base. They dropped many ropes... but I'm not a sucker. Well, I was on Big Dipper when that rope dropped but I learned my lesson. The groomers will mix in the new snow overnight and it should make for a decent morning for an hour or 2 tomorrow. The naturals will benefit from the high traffic tomorrow. Today was busy too, after 10am. And perhaps another refresh on Monday.

a lot of stuff has gotten mowed down in the past couple of days. Tracy is out at Bluebird every AM express but it never seems like the appropriate moment to air concerns as your loading the bubble...

Pretty easy call right now after the slop and hard freeze earlier this week, plus with a "sold out" on the reservation availability chart for today.

Groom it to get the rope dropped or keep the rope up until it either gets above freezing or we get another 6-12" of semi dense snow.

The untouched Beartrap today was interesting. Firm bumps with slick spots in between with 3-4" of fluff on them that got scraped with the first turn on it which quickly became piles of puff with FIRM stuff in between...

Freefall this morning about 9, was my ROTD - the groomers timed it well and had an very nice surface that had an inch or so of fluff on it.

Managed 17 runs and 20.3k verts with my wife today. Sure we waited in some 20+ minute lines at times (a couple of times for the Bluebird to get out of the wind and once on Nitro around 1) but most of what we waited in was 5 minutes or less and short of a couple of times on parts of Long John the downhill skier/rider density was very comfortable

A mountain like Snow just has to groom it all out after a thaw/freeze. It's a no brainrr for the reasons Jeff mentioned, not only that but the liability of coral reef.

I don't give a crap about Yardsale. It's the grooming they did a couple weeks ago on Jaws and Challenger that was disappointing. Once they groom Jaws it tends to be pretty lousy for a while (not to mention boring). Usually doesn't recover until it really thaws in the spring.

All I’ll say is you know trails needed to be groomed this week when Magic grooms 100% of reachable terrain.

Might as well go to Okemo. I liked it when ASC declared it "natural terrain" or something like that, no snowmaking or grooming. At least they got 1 thing right. :smile:
