Don't want us to have a ski season.

Snowmaking at Sugarloaf on Tote Road.

So what do we have so far with guns on?
Mt Snow
Killington
Stowe
Sunday River
Sugarloaf
Bretton Woods
Jiminy Peak
Can confirm Stratton, Bromley and Magic no. Also appears Sugarbush is no.

Wildcat had the system running Friday morning but it was off by late afternoon. Wonder if they had a malfunction?

MRG with snowmaking sounds so....wrong. Isn’t it just at their base area or can they actually blanket an entire trail?
newpylong
They have 3 or 4 short spurs up the runouts and the practice slope. They only pump 300 GPM and not for long. So 4 fans.

Mighty Oak Mt made snow:

Clearly a test, but nice fan guns

November looks way above normal temperature wise through at least mid-month. After this little cold snap, it's warm.

It appears that Wolf Creek beat Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Pass to “first to open” status for two reasons. First, Wolf, in the southern part of CO got 2’ feet of snow. Second, little snowmaking, because there’s been a long draught further north (perhaps the whole state). Plus, there’s been very little natural snow. I didn’t read about Loveland, but the first part of the A Basin article emphasizes low streamflow and low reservoir levels.
Ski areas need cold temperatures, water, and snow to cover their trails. If there is little snow, they can make snow if temps are low enough. If they don’t have enough water, they are dead in the water. It appears that A Basin couldn’t stock their snowmaking pond during the summer.
While Act 250 in VT continues to be debated, I think “forcing” ski areas to build snowmaking ponds has been very positive. The important late fall snowmaking season is normally a low flow period for New England streams and rivers. Being able to (re)stock ponds especially in the spring, during high flow, has been beneficial. Fish can better survive winter in deep stream pools and ski areas have water for snowmaking.
Parts of two newspaper articles below:
ARAPAHOE BASIN SKI AREA — Despite prime overnight snowmaking temperatures this past week, water supplies are posing a challenge for Arapahoe Basin Ski Area’s opening this year.
While the ski area was able to open early last year on Oct. 11, weather has been mostly warm and dry this October, and the drought Summit County is experiencing this year has put a strain on the ski area’s water supplies.
A-Basin Chief Operating Officer Alan Henceroth wrote in his blog Tuesday, Oct. 27, that snowmaking is moving slowly after a dry summer and fall.
“The higher the streamflow, the more water we have for snowmaking. The lower the streamflow, the less water we have for snowmaking,” Henceroth wrote.
However, Henceroth said the recent snow that brought about 6 inches to the ski area and subsequent sunny days are helping the streamflows.
A-Basin spokesperson Katherine Fuller added that as the fresh snow melts, it will help refill the ski area’s water reservoir. She said reservoir storage fluctuates from year to year and that the ski area opens whenever it can, which is why opening dates might fluctuate from year to year.
A-Basin relies on the North Fork of the Snake River to fill its snowmaking reservoir.
“Streamflow is low, and we can make less snow. It’s just one of those years,”

WOLF CREEK • The start of Colorado’s unusual ski season was unusually quiet.
Davey Pitcher and his wife, Rosanne, carefully talked earlier this week about opening their family-run Wolf Creek Ski Area after 24 inches of snow fell on the mountain near Pagosa Springs.

It's sunny here in Maine. Killington cams show snowmaking up top and the sky filled with snow on the Super Star cam. Many resorts still have inactive cams. Must be Covid.

No sign of cold weather beyond 11/5. It looks unseasonably warm for at least a week after that point.

Wild Mountain beat all three.

The 3 inches we got here two weeks ago allowed my 200 vert hill to open too, does that mean I beat them all as well? B)

Extremely dry in Colorado
Had smoke from Cameron fire in Granby before going over trail ridge on 10/15
Closed it a couple days later. Largest fire on recorde there
Can change fast though

Could've skied Roxbury Gap this morning. Twelve cars either in the ditch or pulled off like mine. Easily 4" of new on top of a thin sheet of ice.
Thought I heard guns up the valley when I left in the direction of MRG but that could've been the wind.

Still dry, Cisco. Had a storm a week ago which helped to calm the fires, but not put them out. It's in the 70's all this week and no moisture in sight! :(
