Excellent report and love the shots. I think you can access the Tahawus Glades off the North Quad by taking Rabbit Run Glades off the Tahawus trail and then crossing Hedges.

Glad you enjoy the report! On the 21st I took Rabbit Run, and yes you can access Tahawus Glades, but there is some uphill climb required on Hedges.

On vacation this week so hitting up Gore a lot. On the 21st, there were more snow showers, and more terrain opening up. Was great to hit up Woodchuck for the first time this year - it is accessed from the High Peaks Quad and is easily missed. It's nothing difficult but a fun natural snow dog leg.

Skied Rabbit Run Glade for the first time ever. I had hiked up it this summer. It's narrow, but quite flat, and even an uphill section.

Got a late start (just before noon) and skied till 4. Some heavy snow squalls with the arctic front moving through freshened up the surface with a few more inches of snow. I took these photos after the squalls had passed.

Hullabaloo was a bit scraped off but the views were better than the 21st:

Upper Steilhang is now open. This is an intermediate, narrow run but skews more difficult than other intermediates as it is rarely groomed. It is also now much, much easier to access from the High Peaks Quad instead of a rough uphill from the top of the Straightbrook Quad. It had soft bumps and was a lot of fun.

Great reports Nelsap. I got rained out by a monsoon in my one try to ski there. I'll have to try again. "uphill" seems to be a common theme for the trails

I don't hit Gore a lot of weekends, but had the chance today. Hit a line of slow moving cars, going 30 in a 55, 8 miles out from the mountain. Thankfully the line finally sped up closer to the mountain, so it only added 10 minutes total to the drive. I parked at the unique double chair gateway, which is either from the old Straightbrook Double or the old upper half of the High Peaks Double.

This was definitely the coldest day of the season. Near 10F at the base and 0F up on top, howling winds that blew a lot of the fresh snow off the hardpack. I've been lucky all season with barely any winds any of the days I was there. The gondola shut down and the lines grew at the ADK express. Straightbrook Quad had long lines too. I skied till midday on the main mountain and then went down the Ski Bowl, where the Village Triple was running, and less than 10 people were skiing!

This is a historic area, very close to the site of NY's first rope tow. The chair has a vertical of only 150', and runs are 30-40 seconds max. They have a terrain park there, and there are some narrow chutes to break up the slope. It also is connected to their Nordic center, so you see cross country skiers on the slopes too.

When the Hudson Chair is running, it feels like a retro ski area - small lodge, 900' vertical, about a half dozen trails. They are working on making snow on these runs so hopefully they'll open soon. Made 8 runs there then called it quits for the day.

Still no snowmaking on 46er or Hudson it looks like. Those went in about 10 years ago and the pipes have never been used from my casual observations.

When they shortened the High Peaks Chair they used a few of the chairs and made very short lift line going over the parking lot entrance

Gore 1/27/21

Fresh snow yesterday - about 5", and that was enough to open up some more terrain. Each week at Gore has gotten incrementally better with more terrain opening. They are also focusing on snowmaking in the Ski Bowl, including 46er (!) so that should be opening soon.

Yesterday was a day for me to hit up some new-to-me trails or ones I haven't skied in a long time. Since I used to only ski here 1-2x per year there is still a lot of terrain that is new to me or that I haven't skied in 15 years. Here's some shots of those:

A continuation of fantastic conditions with some more recent fresh snow. Most of the mountain was open, including some more natural snow trails that usually aren't.

I did finally have an experience to add to the bucket list - getting towed by a snowmobile from a broken lift. In the early afternoon, I was coming down Sagamore, to the base of the Burnt Ridge Quad (I've referred to this as the Loneliest Quad in the East (tm), but in my recent visits it has had plenty of traffic and in some cases nearly all the chairs have had someone in them).

The lift was stopped, with skiers waiting at the base. After 10 minutes, several mechanics and snowmobiles showed up. They got the lift running enough to get everybody off, then announced it would be shut down for a few hours for a repair.

The only way out of this area is to either walk the nearly 4000' Cedars Traverse back to the lodge (no fun), or to wait to be towed by a snowmobile back to the lodge. Sno-cats were out as they are much slower and I'm sure with Covid they wouldn't want to have skiers riding inside plus there are probably all kinds of insurance issues with that.

So one by one or two by two, skiers were towed or rode shotgun on a snowmobile back to the lodge. It took about an hour to do this, but honestly, it was quite fun to "ski-jor" back to the lodge, which I have never done before. Gore's crew was professional and did their best to get everybody out as soon as possible.

The "Natural North" sign for some of the North trails. Most of them having snowmaking but they only make snow on Sleeping Bear and Tahawus. Pete Gay has tower snow guns too and is a beginner rated trail but they didn't make snow on it this year.

Back in the day we had a similar experience of being stranded when the lift shut. It was the chair that is where the North Quad is now..I believe it was a double? In any case, it was well past 4 when they started taking us up in snow cats, which was fun for me as a 10-year-old or so. Skied down Showcase in the twilight. It was very cool, and I think we got vouchers for another day of skiing as well as some much-appreciated hot chocolate.

was the North quad running? looks to be empty, never seen that

Yup, it was pretty empty - though believe that was earlier in the day when I took it. I've seen it quite full this year at times, especially early season where it actually had a 5 min wait.
