Decided to switch around my work schedule and went over to Blue Hills for a morning ski. The website strongly encouraged advanced ticket purchase, but the language was ambiguous and I didn't want to have to create an online account so I took a chance and went right to the ski area. Turns out the chairlift was almost empty, though there were actually quite a few youngsters getting lessons on the carpets with their moms looking from the side. There was maybe 20 people on the carpets while maybe 8 people skiing the chair...increased to about 20 before I left. Two people selling tickets, no customers even there. So I was able to get a $30 10AM to 1PM ticket without an issue, just had to answer the standard contact tracing questions and away I went a minute later. How's that for good old fashioned customer service?? (yeah I'm talking to you got-to-buy-six-months-in-advanced-to-get-20%-off-$119-not-including-the-$5-RFID-card ski areas, you know who you are!)
1978 Hall double
Unfortunately there was only one trail open, which I knew going in. The good news was that it was the steepest trail. They had a second top-to-bottom run that had snow on it and maybe had even been open earlier in the season, but unfortunately just didn't have enough snow. Unfortunately it just hasn't been cold enough at night to make snow the past few weeks. However, they had all the guns (including a few fan guns) out on it ready to pounce as soon as the temperatures dropped. Fingers crossed this Monday or Tuesday gets cold enough.
The skiing on Big Blue headwall was fast and firm.
It was skiing on corduroy all day long because there were so few people. It was too firm to cut in sharply, but you could make some nice wide turns. I probably did close to 10 runs before leaving and doing an afternoon hike in Norwell. Would definitely come back on a powder day if the price was right given their steep terrain and glades. Also of note, the coronavirus precautions were excellent in practice, not just for PR. All the staff was wearing masks all the time, even outside. Even the liftie in the shack at the top was wearing a mask the whole time, which I thought was a little over the top. Good for them, though. Overall, a nice local spot, I'm guessing the must challenging of the five Boston metro area ski areas.
