Levi Finland started doing this last spring. They make tons of snow then take snowcats and pile it in huge piles then cover them with insulated tarps. They do this so they can open in early October when they take the tarps off and spread the snow for early season turns.
http://www.levi.ski/en/cameras This will take you to cam with the tarp covered piles. The Zero Point cam. Interesting place it’s above the Arctic circle so in the winter they ski under lights and summer it’s midnight sun. Check out the trail map it’s not a small place.

Snow piles at Levi are still looking healthy. Should be getting spread out in October for the start of their season.

They barely made it last October, lost alot of snow-cover before cold weather and snowmaking became possible. It looks like they saved more snow this year.

Season starts October 8th with “preserved snow”......a long shot but on the bucket list. Obviously need his COVID argaqge to ease....

And Passo Stelvio, Italy at least on the poma track at the bottom. Schnalstal, Italy as well. Fonna in Norway....pretty much standard practice these days with glaciers, though Levi is the first place I have seen that is just covering snow piles that are not on or near a glacier. The blankets are interesting material- like felt.

I was on their website and apparently they saved a record amount of snow this Spring and Summer. Not only is downhill skiing possible on 10/8, but cross country as well. I wonder if it's feasible in our part of the world? It would take up a lot of space.

They must lose some snowcover pushing snow over unfrozen ground. Its also still warm and above freezing at night.

Fantastic start to the season there, lots of natural snow and cold temperatures. With snowmaking, other routes down Zero Point are now open.
