I remember seeing guns from a lot of lifts, amended to say main mountain lifts. The focus being that when they installed them they were aligned to get Fan Gun quality & speed next to as many lifts as possible. With all the new high efficiency guns probably less critical today, but they still seem to like them.

Yeah, I'd rather have a paper map than rely on my phone. That is a stupid policy.

I skiid okemo on my epic northeast value pass on 11 28 and sunapee and wildcat open this Friday, 12/3 my experience has been excellent, their scanners are superior, my activated card showed up in 6 days - it was excellent service for lift served mtn biking at sunapee that opened my eyes to epic

when has night skiing commenced in the past? It does seem odd they would blow off the Christmas week window, at least for the regular til 9pm closing time.

Early, sometimes day one I think, but others would no better. I believe they often ran something like 1-8 early season.

I am going to defend Vail's decision on this one:
1. At this season of the year, if it is warm in the day, the snow firms at night and the skiing can become dangerous.
2. At this season of the year, if it is cold enough to make snow, Most customers do not like skiing thru snow-guns that are operating. At this season of the year, snowmaking is needed and closing at 5PM gives them 4-extra hours.
3. Night-skiing crowds in December tends to be very light. Things like after-school programs and "beer league racing" start in January.
4. Do you know how hard it is to find employees to cover all these hours? This is an industry-wide problem.

NEWS & COMMENTARY: Vail Resorts Operations Suffering from Labor Shortages and Corporate Actions in the Northeast
Vail Resorts has had a notably slow start this season in the Northeast and especially in New Hampshire. The issues extend beyond just simply weather unfortunately. Wildcat, shown in the graphic, opened up just one run from mid-mountain in what is their latest recent opening with the exception of last season which was impacted by weather and labor shortages also. Attitash has pushed their opening date back from this weekend without indicating when they may be open, but weather wasn't the cause. Sunapee and Crotched are not early openers, but they too have underperformed recent snowmaking windows. (Continued)

Wildcat has one run open from the Tomcat Triple which you can enjoy for $82 midweek. Remember when Wildcat was reliably open with 2,000 feet of vertical by mid-November, if not late October?

$82?? Does that mean the skiing at Wildcat is 1.49 times better than Waterville Valley right now because Waterville Valley's ticket price is only $55? ;)

It's a simple case of supply-and-demand. With one of the warmest autumns on record, snowmaking opportunities were rare. It was the last week of November before even Killington expanded to more than 2-runs and they were charging about $90 for that privilege.

Areas are at capacity with season pass holders, and the people who don't have them are welcome - but they will pay through the nose.

I'm not sure why you like defending Vail so much. Compare the terrain that Wildcat has open to other resorts with similar snowmaking capabilities. Also the fact that Wildcat wasn't even close to the first resort in the state to open whereas they normally compete with Bretton Woods to be first. This year, Pats Peak in southern NH, and at a much lower elevation, opened the same weekend as Wildcat. You can't blame it on the warm temperatures.

Ya know … it’s easy to blame and point the finger when weather conditions are especially challenging. It’s easy to blame a huge conglomerate for human error. So why not cut them a little slack for snowmaking problems and focus on the real problem. Profiteering.

Well it's interesting and semi-informative to read his point of view and some of the comments as well, but it doesn't appear to be a gathering of the intelligentsia.

On the topic of Vail, the rumor about paper maps and lack thereof appears to be garbled info -- on both the Okemo and Wildcat sites they state that "paper trail maps will be available in-resort upon request."

It will be interesting to see how they handle that...what's the story with paper maps at Crotched?

I'm hopeful this isn't printing on demand from the 11 x 17 tray in the office copier to enhance the customer experience.

Crotched's website still states that paper maps will not be available. It is also still featuring the photo of the lodge at Alpine Valley.

If they print it in color it probably would't be the worst map in my collection.
