I found a pic of the Borvig Leitner HSQ at Spirit today. That was a hard find. Grips were disappointingly normal.

The holy grail for me, I think, would be pictures of the Ringer detachable chairlift. I think it was in ND?

I rode this lift once before they got rid of it.. I do not remember any floating bullwheel at the terminus. Yan rarely reused either terminals when they did re did lifts.

This is pre-YAN work. There was no floating bull wheel that I remember either.

Russ, thanks for posting them! I’ve wondered what those runs at Intermont looked like. Those look like great trails. Such a shame they are long gone now. I can only imagine how beautiful the panorama was from the summit.

Actually, the view from the top really wasn't nothing to write home about although the lodge was built to display one... if one ever came to pass :p o:) . Pictures 2,3 and 5 display much of the upper portions which ranged from simple to steep (but not killer). The lower mountain was generally intermediate. The investors owned nearly 1400 acres which for central NY was quite sizable. Many deals were made including trips to Albany to solidify land swaps with NYS. Within this acreage, there was a location which fall line vertical would increase to 810. In this area, true expert trails were planned but never came to pass. The Intermont that was, just squeaked in at 761 feet of vertical but I always thought it was closer to 750 :D

The upper expert bowls are all now trees as a lumber company owned that portion... last time I checked. The groomer barn with sits at Intermonts' highest elevation is pretty shot but only 5 years ago it was holding its own. The lodge is as its been for several years... concrete and a few odds and ends. The Stadeli double chair is still hanging... at least the upper half is. Years ago the cable was cut midway and the lower portion removed including bullwheel. The good news is the upper bullwheel and drive engine are standing proud (worth a trip just to see this). After parking your car at the base of the fire tower, its just a short walk thru a few feet of trees. The later added Stadeli T-bar in the experts bowl has been long removed... only small remnants at its base. The first and original Stadeli t-bar is still there with its Ford truck drive at its base and attendant shack still displaying "Greak Peak Sucks".

Having basically skied all the Central NY areas (when they were new and shiny), I have to say Intermont had more and certainly could have been so much more than any other of the Interstate 81ers including Greek Peak.

The story with this place was bad luck. Lack of timely investment in snowmaking and misuse once finally they had it.

I quite agree with your analysis, Russ. Had Intermont succeeded it would have been the premier CNY ski area. The odds of someone buying the land to make a four-season go of things I cannot imagine being greater than 5%. If that.

The money that was spread around the whole CNY area is gone. Big employers such as General Electric and Carrier are no longer and and life from Binghamton to Syracuse will never be as it was. As proof, I can site the recent decision to close Toggenburg and before that the merging of Labrador and Song. Without even checking, I can easily assume skier visits, even for the mighty Greek Peak are down.

Even if someone with crazy money came in, operating Intermont again would never be viable.
