I was just watching a 1961 episode of the tv show Route 66 and it featured some scenes of the old Castle Shannon Incline funicular on the hills above Pittsburgh, PA. That funicular stopped operating in 1964.
The two guys that star in the show rode up the funicular and it was large enough to also carry their Corvette automobile.
The Route 66 episode was called Mon Petit Chou and co-starred Lee Marvin. It was directed by Sam Peckinpaw. Route 66 was kind of a rolling soap opera, but it had one very innovative aspect. Almost every episode was filmed on location in a different part of the US as the two stars (Martin Milner and George Maharis-then Glenn Corbett) experienced their adventures while supposedly bumming around the country with their Corvette. This episode made good use of some on-location scenes around Pittsburgh. One crazy thing about this episode is that the leading lady was filmed water skiing in the busy shipping lanes of the Monongahela, Allegheny and Ohio rivers right beside the city of Pittsburgh. It was quite choppy and I don't think any recreational water skier would normally been doing what the lady did (not sure if it was a stunt double?).
I streamed this episode (season 2, episode 9) on tubi. I think it can also be seen on imdb tv.
