IIRC the Sugarloaf/USA change was b/c there was a small ski area in New Brunswick named Sugarloaf. Also heard it was to give it more international appeal, so who knows...
I think they should return to Pleasant Mt.

NewEnglandSkier13;c-53690 wroteWell it's too late for ticket prices to stay low, they're the fourth most expensive in the state by a long shot. I think it would be good to change it back to Pleasant Mountain. Shawnee Peak never really made much sense in the first place.
I was there Monday evening for $25 (senior discount) and last night for LL Bean $30. Since Bean doesn't do discounts at Sunday River and Sugarloaf (and probably not Saddleback), I suspect this is the last year with Shawnee.
newpylong
L.L. Bean discounts Saddleback, it's Thursday.

I'm in the minority that votes for option C on this one.
A- Shawnee is questionable at best, possibly offensive at worst
B - Pleasant Mountain is a place where old ladies drink tea and paint landscapes
C - Give me a new name! Sell some merch! It doesn't have to be named after the mountain. Moose something, like the pond. Ski the Moose! That would sell t-shirts. You could have a Pleasant Moose mascot to keep the Pleasant Mt people happy.

I agree. Pleasant Mountain honestly sucks, historically accurate or not.

What was the old Pleasant Mountain Logo. I think the current Shawnee Peak logo sucks personally.
conrad
I think Pleasant Mountain would grow on people. It's not trying to be a place where you go to tear up double black diamonds and find the gnar. Rather, it's a family mountain with good night skiing.
Sebago is already starting to get overused by brands plus it's a lake and not a mountain. It's not even really "local" to the Bridgton area
Even though Shawnee Peak is all I've ever know it as since I started skiing there at age 4-5, I vote Pleasant Mountain.

Thing is, it is Pleasant Mountain. Geologically, Pleasant is a Monadnock, an isolated outcrop of igneous rock standing in the middle of a fairly level area. You can see Pleasant in the distance from many viewpoints in western Maine, with the sun setting behind the White Mountains giving it a pleasing backdrop. "Pleasant" is an apt description of this mountain. It deserves its rightful name back.
rickbolger
How to define rightful name? What about Waterville Valley, Sunday River, Camden Snow Bowl, Stowe, Sugarbush, Mad River Glen, Dartmouth Skiways, Living Memorial?
Moose Pond Ski Bowl!
Ski the Moose!
No 12 year olds are going to brag "I tore up Pleasant Mountain" on monday morning, not even in geology class :p
mapnut
But it's not a bowl, it's a ridge with trails on 2 sides.
jaytrem
And Living Memorial is now Brattleboro Ski Hill. Probably realized no 12 year old would brag about skiing Living Memorial.
rickbolger
Sigh. The Mt Pleasant canasta set will be a big hit.

Nobody bats an eyelash at Lake Placid...sort of the same milquetoast sound I think you are objecting to? And Song Mt doesn't exactly scream adrenaline, unless all trail names were Zeppelin song titles...
Better than Tod Mt, BC. They changed the name since 'Tod' means 'death' in German.
But Suicide 6 keeps their name, even in today's world??
I guess Lillehammer covers both sides of the emotional spectrum.
Hmmm

LOL
You got me rickbolger
rickbolger
Hey I can do milquetoast, I learned to ski at Dutchess.
Lake Placid is established. Mt Pleasant has been disused for decades
My objection is purely marketing driven! Starting with a mostly blank slate, "Mt Pleasant" wouldn't be my pick for the ski area. Maybe the resort hotel? I would go there to recover from a case of the vapours.
Lillehammer I could work with
Tod was probably pronounced "toad" eh? ("tote" auf Deutsch) So yeah, definitely change that.

Don't know how the locals pronounced it, but in German it is indeed 'toad'. "tote" is "toe-teh" and means a dead thing (if capitalized) or it's an adjective if there's a noun after it.
Either way, not great from a marketing perspective.
Quietman
It appears that the subpeak near the top of the ski area is called "Little Mtn". So how about Little Mtn Ski Area. or Ski Little. :p
rickbolger
You want that kid to be picked last in gym class!
