December 13th, 1958 (my dad’s 24th birthday) was Killington’s first day of operation.I skied on 10/2/92 and opening day on 10/1/93, those are my two earliest ski days ever at Killington.

Whether they set any records or not, I must give kudos where they are due. The Beast is most definitely back in full force this year. My little one and I just had the most amazing weekend at Killington. One of the best spring skiing weekends ever.

My first of three June 1 days was 1983. I see that was only the second year they went into June. The first two were with the double chair and midstation on the peak, the last was on Super Star.

I skied June 1st, 1985 on Downdraft/Cascade and June 1st 1994 and June 5th 1994 on SuperstarI remember skiing Downdraft on Memorial Day weekend in 1990 and the trail report said: walking trail, caution some skiing may be required. ;))

It was a tongue in cheek snow report, but at that point you had to walk down the Cascade Headwall to the snow on Downdraft and from the snow to the Killington Double Mid-station. All this for about 3-5 minutes worth of skiing.

One of the best days of skiing I ever had was at Killington in mid-February 1986. 13 inches had fallen the night before and the sky was a pristine blue that next morning. The view was so clear that it was said that both Lake Champlain (I think; 29 years ago was a long time) and Montreal could be seen waaaay off in the distance from Killington Peak. Stratton and Ascutney sure looked good that day from the peak!

Snow and season length[edit]

Killington averages 250 inches (6.4 m) of natural snow each winter. That, coupled with a snowmaking system that covers 71% of the trails, has allowed Killington to offer what is often the longest skiing season in eastern North America, typically lasting from October to May.^{[citation needed]} Killington had a reputation for being the first ski area every season in the Eastern United States to open, as well as the last to close, although in recent years the length of the season has begun to shorten. For example, in the 15 years between 1986 and 2001, the resort opened in October in every year but one, and never closed earlier than May 21. But in the five years ending in 2011, opening day has always been in November, and closing day has never made it past May 6.^[13]

197″ this year, well below average. Snow making fire power coupled with prolonged cold temps this winter helped immensely getting to this point.

Prolonged warm weather this May definitely hurt longevity. Warm sunny weekends definitely helped business. Good for them.

In October they would frequently give you blankets at the bottom of the double, and there were still mountain bikers up there!
