Bald Mountain 1/10/2023

Today, I hiked Bald Mountain in Oquossuc, and I got some pictures of the former ski area there. For a ski area that closed in the 60s, the lift line is still surprisingly clear. It looks like there is some backcountry skiing taking place in and around the old ski area. One of the trails is kept clear as a snowmobile trail/cell tower access road, and it looks like it would be fun to ski. It's too bad that the ski area didn't survive, but at least the Hall T-bar lives on nearby at Titcomb!

Great report! I have been going to that area for the last 8 years and was always curious where the old NELSAP Bald Mountain area was. I figured it was around there as I have driven by "Old Skiway Rd" on my way to Bald Mountain Camps. I guess I will have to detour down there next time. Was the top of the T bar near the observation tower? I snowmobiled up to the observation tower there 2 years ago but was not looking for any of the ski area remnants. I will have to be on the lookout when I am up there in a couple weeks with hopefully enough snow to snowmobile. Next time you are in the area you should stop into Bald Mountain Camps for a bite to eat as it is a cool spot and has an old T bar hanging on the wall. Food and drinks are great and there is usually some entertaining people watching.

All of the remains shown here are directly adjacent to the snowmobile trail. The top of the T-bar was near where the cell tower is now. I wasn't wearing snowshoes on this hike, so I didn't want to venture very far off of the packed trails into the deeper snow.

Great photos. I was surprised when I first heard of Bald Mountain on NELSAP, because I lived in Maine in the 1960s and never heard of this ski area when it was active.
