We wrapped up our long weekend ski trip over the border at Crabbe Mountain in New Brunswick. Crabbe is of similar size to BigRock, with just under 900 vertical feet of skiable terrain. The most unique thing about Crabbe is its layout. The lodge is located along a ski trail, about 2/3 of the way up the mountain. There are no lifts (except a beginner handle tow) which start or end at the lodge. The lodge is beautiful and brand new. Unlike what seems to be the trend at many US ski areas, the new lodge offers bag storage on almost every wall! The mountain is served by a Doppelmayr quad chairlift and a parallel Skyway-brand T-bar. Most of the trails that were open today were wider, but it looked like they also have a nice variety of narrower trails and glades when natural snow allows. The trails in the center of the mountain have a good pitch to them, while the trails on the edges are more mellow cruisers.
Today was another chilly day with temperatures in the teens and low 20s with quite a bit of wind. Even though it wasn't crowded, and there was never a wait of more than a minute or two for the quad, they ran the T-bar for most of the day. It was a great way to get out of the wind, and it was a very fun T-bar to ride with a very steep pitch near the top. Roughly half of the mountain was open, mostly trails which had snowmaking on them. The natural terrain that was open was very thin cover, and anything ungroomed was very firm, but skiable. The groomed terrain started out quite good, but developed some icy patches as the day wore on. It was a great way to end our short vacation, and it's another mountain to add to the list of places to return to!
