joshua_segal tedede;c-69075 wroteLooks like Rt 47 between the original and reborn Crotched washed out on June 1. This just popped up in my feed: https://www.facebook.com/wxcyrena/videos/23952961270964245 @joshua_segal or @NELSBEER have you hiked the hill since then? I think Nelson covered the Route 47 issue. Bad erosion from the storm on Comet and Galaxy. The issue is the speed of the water - not the quantity. A few well placed gabions might be a reasonable approach to the problem.
Blaze Speaking of ticks. I have spent countless hours hiking Crotched over the years and this is my observation. I’m not a scientist however I do have 2 Australian Shepherds that I take everywhere and they are tick magnets. Ticks are most active in the spring once the snow melts and it’s the bigger variety that are easier to see. Once the summer sets in ticks are basically nonexistent and it stays that way until the end of August then the small baby ones emerge. These by themselves are hard to see and I assume more deadly because you can’t see them as well. It’s my observation that hiking ski area trails is that what ticks are there are pounded by the groomers and pulverized by snow guns not to mention the fall mow. Granted there are a few but nothing like Quabbin reservoir in central MA. The battle of the ticks ends once the cold weather hits however I’ve seen them in February. So my advice is hike the trails at ski areas to avoid these pesky creatures,..oh and by the way we have no ticks in Northern Maine and two happy K9s!
joshua_segal Good comment Blaze. I've never noticed the late season ticks that you mentioned. Also. I've observed their disappearance in the summer. However, I'm finding them far worse than usual in this late spring season. As climate change continues, the ticks continue to migrate north. So, enjoy your tick-free years while they last!
joshua_segal Sept. 20, 2025 - Saturday Tinges of color on the mountain but not even 5% yet. Doppelmyer was here last week to install the new drive on the Rocket.
Griffinr04061 Is there a date yet for the Fall Crotched Open House? I can not find any info. It is always a fun event!

Wait a second...so if there was a freak Sept. snow storm you would count it as last season? ;) And I thought you always said the end point for New England was sometime in mid August?
joshua_segal The now defunct "Alpine Trace" flipped on May 31. My June day at Killington that year went on the next season. I did start a new thread several comments ago!
