Blaze Having had passes for the past 20 years at Crotched Mountain, my wife and I descided to sell our house in Massachusetts and move to Westfield Maine. Big Rock ski area is 5 miles from our house and my son and I both teach skiing while he is going to school at UMPI. Big Rock is about the same size as Crotched and skis steeper with narrower trails. Snowmaking trails are limited to only 3 trails, Comet, Family trail and Uncle Buds. The other 23 trails are natural snow only and are weather dependent. The mountain faces west and at times the wind blows some snow over to New Brunswick! The weather is mostly cloudy and cold. It snows constantly with minor accumulation guaranteeing Aroostook squeaky fluff daily. On February 13 and 16 we received a total of 24 inches which oppened the whole mountain including the woods. The mad dash for powder is non~existent unlike other areas I have skied guaranteeing fresh turns all day long. Big Rock has 3 lifts. A new Doppelmayr fixed grip quad with 81 chairs and 13 towers made of galvanized steel was installed in the summer of 2024 replacing the comet. A dated triple located in the beginner area rises mid mountain and a carpet for never Evers. The crowds are nothing like other areas because nobody lives here! Except for your occasional race day Saturday's there is never a lift line. A few pictures from the last few months!!
NewEnglandSkier13 BigRock (it's actually one word) is an awesome mountain and seems like a great place to call home! It's worth noting that the triple isn't actually that old. It's just over 20 years old, which is quite young by ski lift standards. It's newer then any of the lifts at Crotched. Hopefully we continue to see more pictures from BigRock! Have you skied Quoggy Jo, Jefferson, Lonesome Pine, Crabbe, or Farlange yet? There are so many great options in that region!
Chuckstah Great report. I see that it's on Indy and put it in my GPS. 5 and 1/2 hours, yikes. Maybe it could be combined with a stop at Camden Snow Bowl on the way up and back. A goal for next year, just maybe.

I hope to combine it with a visit to Quoggy Jo, then Lonesome Pines in Fort Kent. I've been talking about that trip for 15 years now :D
ME2VTskier They can make snow all over the mountain with the portable fans. They used to usually start over on the trails served by the triple, which was installed new for 2004. It's been more of an winter like the old days, after a slow start.
justkeepmovingne Great report! I’d like to find a way to get up there soon. More than anything else, zero liftlines and decent snow are what I prioritize these days, and BigRock is about as off the beaten path as you can get!
Blaze “Thank you all for liking my ski report from Big Rock! The skiing right now, as I speak, is honestly ‘meh.’ It’s your typical early-season conditions—limited natural snow and only a few trails open, which is what most areas are dealing with at the moment. We just need more snow to open additional terrain. Big Rock is at least a 6-hour drive from Crotched, and depending on where you’re coming from, it’s definitely not a day-trip kind of mountain. So here’s what I’ll do: I’ll update this post when conditions really improve and the skiing gets good, so you’ll know the drive will be worth it!”
