They need the money to do the install even if the gearbox is an easy bolt on. They don't have that right now.

Whaleback just announced the chair lift has been repaired and will be running tomorrow 3/7/26.

"Hello Whaleback Community,

After a lot of hard work from our incredible team, we’re excited to share some great news: the chairlift at Whaleback Mountain has been fully repaired, tested and has passed state inspections. We are ready to run! The lift will be operating tomorrow March 7 from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back out on the hill. It is looking to be a classic spring ski day, with some afternoon sun and temp of 50!

Thank you to our staff who have worked tirelessly who helped make this happen, and to all of you for your patience and support while the repairs were underway.

Come up, take a ride, and enjoy the mountain with us! The chairlift will be running, Brooks Hubbard will be playing, racers will be racing, the smoker will be cooking away and the taps at the Pub will be ready to support the celebration.

I’m sure they will take a hit throughout the weekend. But they still have plenty of snow. Everywhere in Northern New England has at least a foot of snow on the ground, even in the valleys. Their web cam shows wall to wall snow without any breaks or signs of thin coverage. That might change by the end of the weekend due to the temperatures, but even with the warm up, they should be able to make it through next weekend, if they want to.

Great news. I might have to stop by Sunday and give them some Indy support. I would imagine they still have a decent base for this weekend, at least.

Great news for this mountain even if it is towards the end of the season! Their website confirms that it is thanks to a donated gearbox from Holiday Mountain, NY that the lift is now operable; it came from a similar vintage Poma double that they removed in 2024. Good to see independent ski areas working together to keep these older lifts running in a time when it’s getting more challenging to do so due to lack of parts availability, limited manufacturer support, and high cost of new lifts.

I just saw an emotional plea to the community from Whaleback as their double chair now needs a new haul line. Im sorry but you have so little money you need to ask for donations for everything ? Sounds like years of bad management to me. It had to be known item on the hit list that the haul line will need to be replaced.
My question is even if they ordered it today on Amazon Prime and it was delivered tomorrow whats the time line for it to be replaced spliced and re inspection by winter time will it be another year of them not offering the chair until Spring 2027 ?

Sadly the only path forward for this group is to admit they are unable to realistically operate the facility any further and to actively try to find another owner/operator. Everything else is good money after bad. A potential deal with Indy fell through last fall.
