TomWhite Quebec’s First Skytrac Coming to Mont Sutton Peter's article is both about a resort's new lift and Skytrac reaching further. Liftblog.com Sutton's decision to replace 3 (aging) doubles with a single higher capacity lift is interesting. Of course, age, maintenance and reliability are always issues with older lifts. I don't recall when, but I think we had a discussion about replacing 2-3 lifts with a single one. I wonder what the experience has been when resorts did this. My only immediate example is Gunstock. They replaced two summit doubles with fixed grip triple. This was before the HSQ. I've never been a frequent visitor to a resort that did this. Perhaps someone who has could start a separate thread.
TomWhite Yes, I was at Stowe during the last season they ran the single. I was also at Stratton during the first season for the first FourRunner. Stowe season pass holders were there. They were irate over removing the double n single and the new lift not running during Christmas vacation. If I recall, the wrong (size) bullwheel was installed. The Dopp owner came over to supervise the installation of the correct one.
zapada I'd be very interested to see a map of the new lift line that is planned for this lift. While replacing 3 lifts with 1 will certainly increase efficiency, the existing lifts serve very different purposes: II-west is a shorter beginner lift, I is the longest, serving a mix of novice and intermediate runs, and I-west largely serves as a condo access lift but also serves some of the same trails that lift I serves. While I can see combining lifts I and I-west, the loss of II-west is the part I understand the least. Will the new lift have a mid-station to serve the beginner area? Even if it does, getting four beginner skiers on a lift is a lot harder than two. Or will the upgraded magic carpets cover the beginner area in the future? I'm a little confused by the plan, and also very sad to see some beautiful, classic Mueller lifts coming down, especially I-west with its center-pole chairs and swing-around safety bars.
