When was the last time you bought a new ski/winter coat?

Was in dxl big / tall Labor Day sale, ended up buying the only coat for sale, a Columbia with some funky gold lining with some “tech” omni heat, guess I’ll look good in the ghetto. Best part comfy and light , $185 for 60% off! Still have a 25 yr old down coat in reserve.Seems one area where inflation hasn’t hit too bad, don’t know with the new tariff inventory though.

7 years ago was the last time I bought one, I think. I buy a new one maybe once every 5-7 years. I don't intend to buy a new one soon.

My current jacket is an Oakley Jackpot 10k Biozone. That jacket is amazing. I can be comfortable in it from anywhere between 45 degrees down to -5. Incredibly wind proof but breathable, very light. Ski pass pocket on the sleeve, large pockets at the sides, large glove pocket on the chest. Nice inner liner with thumb holes for extra warmth. I bought it for $96 during a black friday sale in 2018. Going to keep it as long as I can because I like it too much.

I guess I did buy a new down jacket last winter, but I don't use it to ski; separate category. All the same, its a nice jacket that keeps me warm on cycles into the office or walking around town. It was some sort of Marmot down jacket. Maybe the hype or the highlander?

I've had my current shell jacket for about 7 years. It's from L.L. Bean and came as the outer layer as a 2-in-1 system. It's great and I have no plans on replacing it.

When I got it, it came with a down jacket as the inner layer that could zip into it so they could both be worn as one jacket. I used the down jacket up until about 2 years ago, when the down filling had lost most of its loft and wasn't really providing much insulation anymore. At that point I replaced it with a new down jacket from REI.

2007. No lie. I bought a used Karbon a couple years ago for $70. It was a steal.

I got a new Elevenate jacket at a sidewalk sale outside one of the fancy stores in Aspen in late May 2021. I think it's the Brevent model, in black. It was $200 new, insulted and goretex. It's not real sexy, but it's bomber on cold and stormy days. I'm function over fashion. I've worn it ~175 ski days so far. I'm old school and want an insulated jacket for any temps under 32 degs. Use the hood often on cold chairlift rides. I find the pitzips give me an out if I get overheated. I looked into buying a matching pair of Elevenate pants, but new on the internet they were were about $400+ , so I'm going with a mismatch for now :) I believe Elevenate is Swedish, but correct me if I'm wrong?

From Arapahoe Basin, 7 March 2025, I got a used pair of yellow Men's size Large Arc'teryx Sabre pants for $85 in 2024 that pairs well with the jacket.

Agreed. Good Columbia jackets usually run $150 or less, and are often even cheaper on sale.

Yea but to find one MY size 60% off is not easy although online there are similar deals.

I tend to agree at least for normal/mild/friendly days, but in stormy weather it's awful nice to have a seriously weather resistant yet breathable garment. In a way I think a versatile, water resistant jacket is more important in the East than in the West, because in the East you're more likely to encounter the most challenging of all ski weather: rain with 40 deg temps.
Most of the avid, strong young skiers (such as my son) in Utah wear a mid-winter combo I consider - not warm enough. They have a base layer and just a thin water resistant shell over it. They can get away with this throughout the winter except for big snow days or the rare extended cold snap.

2004 I bought a used blue & yellow ski parka on ebay for $7. I still have it as my back up

Bought an Obermeyer from REI online on sale about 3 years ago and really like it. Favorite feature is the sleeve pocket for an RFID card. I just stick my arm out and if no ones in front of me I can usually slide through the gate without stopping. I've seen people spinning around, jumping up, and down and practically standing on their heads to get their card to read from a pocket full of other junk and likely their phone.
Bought a Gerry over 20 years ago at Ross for about $40. I still have that as a back-up. Really liked that one and was never cold in it even on minus zeros days.

I only replace when the jacket begins to have functional issues I.e. zipper issues or the insulation doesn’t function. I only buy on clearance. My last 2 parkas were both Burton bought on clearance from Burton. Both coats were great!

Apparel manufacturers must hate us. Every 5-7 years I have to buy a new instructor's parka. The previous one I use for free skiing so I can get 10-14 years out of a parka before it's completely retired.

I repped the same black burton coat from 2011 to 2019. Then for 2020s ski season i bought a gortex flylow shell for like $250. Using a gortex shell with varying layers underneath is the way to go 100%. I gave that jacket to the ski wife and I bought my purple strafe jacket on ebay for $150 in 2022 because I wanted to look like a mcDonalds character. That jacket went new for like $700 in 2014. I bought another of the same coat again on ebay for $150 so i could practice reseam taping my other jacket. The second jacket was basically brand new and never used. My goal is to rep these two puruple jackets for 10 plus years.

I have a pair of trew bibs that I got in 2020 and I probably have 1-2 more seasons on those. I have ate through those things with touring and skiing glades.

I am wearing my purple coat and she's got on the flylow coat

That purple coat is such an incredible color. If I was in the market for a new one, I’d be buying the same one.
