Adair Inn in Bethlehem NH closes

I just learned that the Adair Inn in Bethlehem NH (close to Cannon) has shut down. It was sold by its long-time owners a couple of years ago. In early November, the "new" owners (of less than 2 years) shut the place down. Really sad. It was a very nice Inn. We stayed there in early March 2025. They were having problems with the kitchen which the owner later acknowledged (the long-time chef had left and his replacement was incompetent), but the Inn was really a wonderful place.

This is purely speculation, but I'm wondering how much the Canadian boycott of the U.S. is responsible for this outcome? Canadians en masse are staying away from the U.S. due to the current president and his insane treatment of our wonderful neighbors to the north (and most of us are disgusted by how America's dear friend Canada is being treated). Every single Canadian I know (and I have business in Montreal so I'm regularly interacting with Canadians) vows to NEVER step foot in the U.S. until the current administration is gone. By all reports tourism in New England is very much down, {Sentence deleted JS for political content not relevant to skiing.] due too the Canadian boycott of the U.S., and possibly because it was a lousy foliage season this year.

At any rate, hopefully a new buyer emerges for the Adair Inn and it will resume operations. The current owners are likely going to take a major haircut when they sell the property. The current asking price is (don't laugh, please) $2.4 million. My $0.02, but the property can't be worth anything more than half that amount given the falloff in tourism and the general negative economic conditions {Sentence deleted JS for political content not relevant to skiing.]

I am sure it didn't help. I have heard significant drop in visits to US over the past year, and there was a nearly 30% drop in Canadians driving across the border to VT, so I assume that impacted the Cannon area. Hope we come to our senses and quit demonizing the northern neighbors.

I didn't mean us. I meant our politicians who thought it wise to put tariffs on Canada, which is driving the drop in visitors. They don't want to visit a country that is screwing their country over.

New hoteliers (who from the photo appear to clearly be on the back-9 in life) decided owning an Inn wasn't the best idea and decide to get out of the business.

I'm sure a 7500 SF house set on 182 acres will command a price better than a million.

It'll probably get snapped up by a NYC escapee as private vacation home.

FWIW, Canadians are the world's worst tippers, and every waitstaff I talk to about Canadian tipping habits all say so. I know this because when I travel I go out to eat.

My apologies, lotsoskiing, I was wrong. Tedede is demonizing our northern neighbors because his well-placed sources tell him that Canadians are all awful tippers.

So I was incorrect when I stated that I've not heard of one person in New England who is demonizing our northern neighbors. That's no longer true.

For what it's worth, like in Europe, tipping simply isn't as prevalent in Canada because service workers are more likely to be paid a living wage without needing tips.

That’s a shame. Had great get-away ski and not ski weekends there with my wife. Last time we were there was in 2002 I believe so I’m sorry to hear of its demise. Still have a coffee mug. Incredible property.

I'm not sure the hostility or politics of this thread is serving any skiing related purpose. It is true that a lot of the northern tier ski areas draw heavily from Canada, that Canadians are minimizing their tourism in the United States, and they are affecting the local economies in ski country.

I considered closing this thread, but I hope that the good sense of the SJ2.0 community will allow this thread a peaceful death.

I also think the rise of STRs is killing lodging as we know it. In addition to making ski bum housing (like I remember it 40 years ago when I was a ski bum) impossible to find in and close to ski towns. Canadian absence aside, it's got to be brutal to run a traditional lodge nowadays.

The Adair Inn is under a purchase agreement at this time. Eventually we'll find out the sales price. It was listed for $2.4 million, and given the speed with which it went under P&S, it suggests the sellers are getting pretty close to the price they wanted. If that's the case, then good for them. Let's just hope that whoever is acquiring it still wants to run it as an Inn.

The Adair Inn in Bethlehem NH sold for $2,150,000. For sure that’s not the asking price of $2.4 million. I’m not sure how much the sellers acquired it for in 2023 - it might take more effort to find that number than it’s worth, but the bottom line is that they got out more or less whole. And as for the future of the place - who knows?
