I never realized that. Was that when they 1st cut it?

IIRC, the contest was held the first winter it was opened. However, I am fairly certain that the Ski Patrol, and regulars who ski there, still refer to it as 44.

Here’s the 1984 map, with 44 as the name: https://skimap.org/data/315/7/1210543838.jpg

It got the name Westway by the 1986 map, but they kept the “trails having numbers AND names” for a few more years on the public map and I still hear staff use the numbers, which is probably why the name has continued to stick. Even marketing/PR usually refers to it by both names. Also, unless my memory is faulty, at least one of the trail signs up at the summit said trail 44 until recently.

Wow…I forgot how old 44/Westway is!! That ’84 map does not have Huega, or Whitecloud, yet. As for trails being identified by numbers and names, I get a kick out of skiers that refer to skiing an 80…that is taking trail 45 (Whitecloud) to trail 35 (Wayout).

Interesting stuff. It must have been the 44th trail cut. And K27 was the #27 trail.
