TL;DR: Queensbury Town Board finally gave approval to West Mountain to re-zone the Northwest base area for “The Woods” project. This happened just over a week ago.
Some details on it for those who haven’t been following this: First proposed in 2021, West Mountain is trying to turn their Northwest base area into more of a ski-and-stay resort. In my opinion, this is a great thing because the State of New York does not have a lot of options where this is possible, and West is super accessible.
Project will include roughly the following:
250 apartments
60 condos
40+ single family homes. I’ve seen anywhere between 46 and 60 as the total
Grocery store
New resort facilities
80 room hotel
New high speed chairlift and 2 new trails
Conference center
Additional restaurant and shop/retail options beyond what is offered at the main base area
People will probably complain about traffic and such per usual, but any project that adds so many additional housing units (even if many are luxury) is a GOOD thing. Especially considering that over their 12 years of ownership, the Montgomery family has really proven to be reliable, reasonable folks who have put a ton of time, love and effort into that mountain. Revamping both lodges, new lifts, replacing lights for modern ones and even expanding night terrain significantly, improving snowmaking and even cutting a couple new trails… They’ve done a lot of good, and they feel like a trustworthy group to actually make good on their plans and promises.
