2 years ago, on the way home from Hunter, i stopped there to snoop around. Unfortunately, it was so cold that my phone died so I couldn’t take pictures (and my Jeep also sank in the ice and I got stuck…but that’s another whole story). It’s really creepy there. It’s almost like they closed for the night, expecting to open the next day but everyone vanished, like The Leftovers.
A tree fell on the smaller lift, so the cable is off and the chairs on one side are laying on the ground. The lift operator shack still has the daily maintenance checkbook in it.The lodge still had all the tables, chairs, garbage cans, soda machines, etc in it. Here’s some pictures someone uploaded to another site http://www.chairlift.org/cortina.html
I drove by in the fall and there was a sign that said Paintball. I don’t think it will ever operate as a ski mountain again. I was there when we had a ton of snow and there were snowmobile tracks up and down all of the trails. I skied there last in 1990 with my school ski club. Actually, I was 11 and fell off the lift. My friend who was ahead of me getting on the lift was moving a little slow, so when the lift swung around, I wasn’t lined up with it yet and got pushed off to the side. Stupidly, I grabbed the side of the chair and hung on! It lifted me to the first tower and ski patrol had to make arm baskets for me to drop down into.
Not a fan of Cortina at all!
