Big Sky New Tram

Peter Landsman who runs Liftblog.com has an interesting article on Big Sky's new tram.
It's actually the movement of the current tram's base on the rock glacier that struck me. Peter says, "The old tram needed to go. The bottom terminal was built atop a rock glacier and, while designed for it, flowed at least 25 feet downhill over the past 28 years." Wow! The new tram's base and the top terminal of a new gondola are below the rock glacier.

Gotta figure this is a $10-$15 million dollar install. At $10 to $40 a ride, it's going to take a while to pay it off.

Considering your standard high speed quad or 6 pack is costing in the 8 - 12+ million range these days. That new Big Sky Tram is probably closer to 50 million than 25 million. Heck, when Jackson Hole replaced their tram with a new one 5+ years ago, that tram cost per reports 31 million

And construction of the new Jackson tram was far less complicated than the new Lone Peak tram.

And the refurb of Cannon’s tram is $18M which includes…

“Beyond that, all primary systems are within the current project scope,” he continued, including tram cars, carriage assemblies, hanger arms, haul rope, electrical and electromechanical systems (drive, brake, safety, etc.).

Cannon is keeping the existing terminal buildings, towers and track ropes, however, which will save a lot.

They better get going fast on that tram. Almost 2' expected up there this week.

And, I'd love to ski Sun Valley. It's not supposed to have anything terribly scary as far as terrain but I hear the trees are great and ooh... The History! I'm sure it would be any Nelsaper's haven!
