McCauley Mountain 2-17-24

Great time 6-7 inches of fresh snow. First time on Skis since 2013. 15 Runs, 9400 vertical. Stuck to mainly 4 or 5 trails but everything was open Except Bark Eater glades and Decamp. Did Sidewinder a bunch, Rambler, Challenger and Skyride which is a blue. The pitch on the initial headwall is about 37 degrees and runs about 300 yards before mellowing out surprising choice on the rating. Did one tree run through Gods Land and Helmers a very steep and bumped run under the lift. Big news is the mountain did get a funding grant and lift through the ORDA to replace the Summit double with a Triple this spring/summer.

Yeah there were some Vail resort jokes being had in the lift line. It got to the point where it backed up all the way to the guy in the tan coat at one point. It was right after lunch though. The lodge basically emptied at one time and it took a good 45 minutes to mellow out. Waited maybe 10 minutes for a couple runs. Then it was just a minute or so wait all the rest.

I was just as surprised as you are. It fell great and I settled in quick. funny story. I did get a backhanded compliment. You see; a very traditional looking skier tall, skinny etc followed me down through the glades with his son and I was with mine. We all just worked are way through together. When we got to the lift line and he said and I quote "You're a really good skier for a big guy". I just smirked and said thanks, but I did well and felt well. Its been a long time coming. Im excited to be back on sticks. its been a journey to get here!

Yep! it will be a nice addition I believe the double will be retired and chairs either stored or sold.

Per Website: "in the spring of 2024, Gore will break ground on three other major re-development projects planned to transform the Ski Bowl. They include a new lodge and restaurant, a replacement of the old Hudson triple chair with a new, high-speed detachable quad, and an exciting, entirely unique new Zip Coaster attraction."

thanks. I thought that was a far future wish list kind of thing. I did enjoy using that underused parking & base but I guess change is inevitable.

I talked to a lift attendant about the new lift on Saturday. He said it is actually the Big T-Bar that is being replaced and the double chair will remain in place. I did not ask any further questions. I'm guessing the difficulty of getting snow all the way up the Big T-Bar line to allow it to operate, must be part of the reason. It's a pretty intense line as far as t-bars go.

My hope is that the Hudson Triple, when reinstalled, is sped up. I timed it out to be running at something like 375'/min. It just crawls up the Ski Bowl. 10 min ride. I would imagine that the chairs could be placed closer together as the McCauley line will be shorter. We calculated the current capacity of the lift to be only about 800 skiers/hour, less than what McCauley's double is.

I hope so! The nice thing about McCauley is that the face is super steep. The lift line will go up the steepest part of the mountain if they are pulling the T-bar out too. Much Shorter lift line than the Current double. Better Access from the base lodge too.
