What's the most remote ski area you've ever visited and would you go back?

Honestly, any place I’ve skied has been highly accessible by well-maintained highways. That being said, my most remote (and it sure is bleak way up there - wouldn’t want to get lost or be alone, once you leave civilisation!) is Mt Tremblant. I was there in 1990 and it sure has become a posh destination resort. I’d go back in a minute. The skiing was out of this world and the French Canadian atmosphere was ooh la la fine!

Jackson hole was isolated and remote.

Searchmont Ont felt remote and rustic, of course that was 20 yrs ago but not much changed when I went back 10/08.

Unless you live in Quebec City, Le Massif and Mt. St. Anne are among the most remote in the northeast - both awesome areas.Keeping in New England, Saddleback and Sugarloaf are about the most remote major areas that I would consider.

Sugarloaf definitely. Did a junior seminar there in 1983 and I wasn’t smart/mature enough to appreciate the big mountain skiing of it and I didn’t do enough photography to capture my time there.

I will have to say the most remote if skied is Squaw mt. Maine followed by Le Massif then Mt. Tremblant.

Saddleback and yes, I’ll absolutely go back there next time I have a chance.

The most remote I’ve driven by in the summer is Northeast Slopes VT. which I presume would be pretty high in a competition of NE ski areas nobody has heard of.

I did the drive from Las Vegas to Mammoth Mtn in June of 2006 after attending a trade show, Mammoth is one of the most isolated major ski resorts in the United States. During the winter it’s only accessible via Route 395 From Los Angeles, or route 50 from Lake Tahoe, otherwise all other Mtn passes are closed during the winter.

In the East, Big Squaw would be the most remote for me.

A couple of people mentioned Big Squaw: When the upper lift is running with 1750′ of vertical, that’ one thing.  At this point with just the lower mountain - I can’t imagine going far for that little.

I agree with mammoth and have to add Big Sky to that list as well. The king of them all would have to be Mount Bohemia, its 3 hours from anything in the U.P. and the U.P. is 5 hours from anything. But if I ever get close i will go back, its tree skiing nirvana.

Bear Paw in MT.  Kinda small, pretty far from every other ski area and not much else going on up there either.  I had a great time but I doubt I would go back unless I was already passing by.

Marmot in Alberta is also kinda remote.  It’s a more substantial mountain, I’d gladly go back.

I already booked a flight to Prince George, BC next year.  That trip will no doubt make Bear Paw seem a lot less remote.

Black Mountain, Maine is one I’d definitely return to, and already have, even though it’s a ways away.

Enchanted Mountain, Maine. I can’t go back. My group were the only customers the only day I was there. It wasn’t more remote than Squaw or Saddleback, but had less to offer.

I skied there in March of 1999 with the summit lift running, so it was worth it at the time as I did the drive from Sugarloaf for the day. It was a one and done ski area for me living in NYC at that time. For more local folks it would be worth the trip, but I’d rather ski at Saddleback, as it has more trails, lifts and terrain than Big Squaw.

In New England, I’d have to go with Lonesome Pine Trails, ME. Over 7 ½ hours from me and at 47° 15′N a full degree north of Mt. Tremblant. Also Tremblant, which I’ve skied as well, is an hour closer to me.I’d like to go back to Lonesome, but NELSAP will have to drive.

Balsams Wilderness, would be second for most remote, followed by Big Tupper.I would count Snowshoe, certainly remote from where I live, but I did not ski there, visiting last July after going to Cass Railroad.

You need to take 395 from Tahoe also, 50 heads east through NV.  Regardless it’s really a beautiful and very long drive.

What I meant was that’s the other point of winter access over the Sierra from Nevada.

I guess it would be Jackson Hole. I’ll bet there would not be an airport just for the Yellowstone tourism… (Now I’ll find out that’s why it’s there and not for the ski tourism.) East it is Plattekill. Off the beaten path, I remember the roads off the highway were not paved.
