Gunstock 1/2/2016

It was another great day on the slopes even with the limited terrain open. There was one open run from the summit and more terrain from the other two quads. Temperatures were in the mid to upper twenties and snomaking was ongoing all day. The trails got crowded, but lift lines were never bad. A dusting from the night before made for some great edge-able ungroomed terrain on the sides of the trails. I’m still having troubles with focus on my camera, so the photos are still somewhat blurry.

I’ll answer for him, since he is probably out skiing. They are both nice views. Winnipesaukee is much bigger at 21 miles vs 8 miles long so it’s a little more interesting to take in. Sunapee is less than 2 miles and Winni is 3.5 miles from the summit. You easily can see Mt Washington, Chocorua and others from Gunstock. If I recall correctly, from Sunapee you can see the backside of the Franconia range and Mooselaukee in NH as well as several of the ski areas in southern VT.

So, that’s Lake Winni! What a beautiful view from the Gunstock summit. Love seeing Mt Washington in the distance.

Is the view from Sunnapee just as spectacular?

I should add: you all are BLESSED to live and ski in such beauty as you do!!! It is such a treat to see these pics from areas I only can dream about visiting aside from the occasional trip east. To get to Vermont or New Hampshire requires a flight from Ohio; a car trip would take over 12 hours.

That’s towards Ascutney in right foreground, with Okemo to left and perhaps Roundtop/Bear Creek/Plymouth Notch between. I can’t make out Kpeak or Pico which should be to the right of Mt A. or behind it. Correct?

Here’s someone’s towards lake: although I disagree with the author. This looks to be taken almost North, towards Mooselauke with the Franconia Range on distant right of center.

Wow.. The view from there is incredible. We drove by there this summer and I do hope we can make it there this winter.

I think you’re right: KMart is hidden behind Ascutney. Okemo’s trail layout is clearly seen; it looks nice. Didn’t know it faced east. Not entirely sure what Roundtop looks like but I’ll trust what you say.

<p>I don’t have the photo handy, but I remember you can clearly see Killington from Sunapee, mainly Bear Mt, well to the north of Ascutney. Okemo dominates the view, but you can also see Haystack, Mt. Snow, Stratton, Timberside at Magic, and a side view of Bromley. Roundtop should be behind Ascutney. Sam’s photo is too cloudy to show Killington, I think.</p><p>Funny how Gunstock is an area you don’t hear much about. I only skied it once waaaaay back in 1969 IIRC. Seems to me the summit lift was too long for the vertical, leaving long flat stretches on all the summit runs.</p>

I think you are right Mapnut about the view, we’ve discussed/argued about it on SJ1.0 a few times.

Kind of a true assessment of Gunstock, but there are 2 or 3 down the middle. Going to skiers left is a long run along the ridge, but hey, that gives you more time to admire the view.

I like to listen to people on the top of Sunapee pointing out the wrong ski areas to people.
