OK here's a good one. I had so much fun with the last one (Pico) with figuring out the whole drainage thing there and a north flowing river etc. that I cooked up another good one with a river clue. Here goes!

1. Sel Hannah was involved (I know, that narrows it down)
2. There was a lake nearby, but it's gone!
3. The snowmelt drains into a river, which flows into another river, which flows into another river, which flows into the Atlantic. Said snowmelt mingles with some World Cups locations snowmelts along the way.

Not lost.

For clarification, when you say the snowmelt drains into a river, do you mean it in the broad sense as in it could be a brook or a kill, or the body the snowmelt drains into is referred to as "X" River?

Cannon is an EXCELLENT guess, but no. North of the notch the Coppermine Brook flows into the Ham Branch of the Gale River, which flows into the Gale River, then the Ammonoosuc River, then the Connecticut River. Lafayette Brook is probably in the mix somewhere too.

I also would guess that some of the snowmelt from Vista Way and the Tramline (and whatever hellish backcountry trails are out there) flows into Profile lake and then into the the Pemi which flows into the Winni which forms the Merrimack. While that sounds like three, the Pemi and Winni actually merge, and it goes into a lake prior to the river. BUT the Winni collects the cups!!! Points for that one!!!

Unfortunately the snowmelt doesn't flow into one river, then another river, then another river, then the ocean.

And don't forget the lake...

There was a lake behind the South Mt Resort; most apparent on 1967 topos and earlier. Kind of between Cooper Memorial Drive and Bunker Lane - check

Loon's snowmelt goes directly into the East Branch of the Pemi River, into the Pemi, into the Merrimack and into the Atlantic. Plural world cup locations include Waterville Valley and Cannon; both of which directly or eventually empty most or all of their snowmelt into the Pemi as well - check

If this is what you were thinking of, still ceding question making to someone else for the moment.

I think you're referring to an old sewage treatment pond?

Another good guess but no, the Pemi doesn't technically flow into another river -- it merges with the Winni and becomes one river in Franklin. The ski area in question drains via the usual seasonal and assorted rills and brooks into one river, which enters another river, which enters another river, which flows into the deep blue sea.

Incidentally the bulk of Cannon winds up in the mighty Connecticut. the other world cup location that would apply to Loon is Gunstock (water mingles via the Winni), even though it pains me to count Tele.

The missing Lake is identified on a sign at the ski area.

The first river has a covered bridge over it. I guess that's not much of a clue for New England.

No Ponds involved here, it was a Lake.

Here's another clue: The World Cups snowmelts (one upstream, one downstream, another way downstream, maybe others) went out to sea a long, long time ago BTW via the rivers, and it does share one aspect of the river thing with one other operational ski area in New England that I know of.

Sunday River hosted a World Cup in 2021; its snowmelt flows into (surprise!) the Sunday River, which flows into the Androscoggin River, which flows into the Kennebec.

Wildcat also was partly engineered by Sel Hannah, and its snowmelt flows into the Peabody River, which flows into the Androscoggin which flows into the Kennebec, picking up World Cup sites Sugarloaf's and Sunday River's snowmelt on the way. But I still don't know about a lake, and there's nothing upstream of it because it's right at the height-of-land in Pinkham Notch. I actually don't understand what you mean by "went out to sea a long, long time ago BTW via the rivers".

A couple issues. The South Branch of the Carrabassett River is not really a separate river from the Carrabassett River. And, the Androscoggin River does not flow into the Kennebec River. Both rives flow into Merrymeeting Bay.

I think he means the world cups were a long time ago, so not Killington

well specifically the first one upstream and the first one downstream in river #2 yes were before many of us were born. And then there are others that mingled in the other two rivers, and maybe others I'm unaware of. The upstream snowmelt is (was) in a different state.

and don't forget: it does share one aspect of the river thing with one other operational ski area in New England that I know of, but that's in a different state, different river; no lake, no Sel Hannah (at least not any major involvement) just river.

I know there's a Sel's Choice at Okemo. No one has mentioned it. It's close to a World Cup site (Killington). Don't know about the missing lake.

Huh? Didn’t the alpine WC start in the late 60s? That wouldn’t predate a lot of us.
Lake may be gone because of a dam removal or install like the Quabbin.

No and yes

The upstream ski event(s) that arguably fit this bill first occurred in 1939, the downstream event was a few years later. they are referred to as "world cup" blah blah blah. Then there were events that mingled way downstream that meet your more narrow definition of WC.

"Dam removal" is spot-on, in a manner of speaking.

The frustrating thing for me in all this is someone had the rivers, but didn't guess the area.

I will further the clue by saying the two New England ski areas with the river relation are very different places.

It's all about the river!
