However I don't want to argue it. I suggest you do that with someone who volunteers at a local hill, and let us know how that works out for you. Or perhaps try it with some of the kids at Cochran's. Good luck!

I fully agree on both counts here. I feel that many smaller areas (BMOM, Titcomb, Baker, etc.) are actually more "real" than most destination resorts.

- Local Hills - Limited openings, generally old surface lifts
- Regional Day Trip Area
- Destination Resort - Places with large trail systems with many beds and apres ski activities available

Call them like you did in the quote above and nothing more.
Calling them real or not real is almost like calling man-made snow 'artificial'.

As for beer--- I've found some good porters and reds as I miss Otter Creek's Copper Ale and Stovepipe Porter-- overloaded on IPA's.

14th Star Brewing's Valor Ale is hoppy but very enjoyable, Norwich U grads and vets. They also do fundraisers like "Raise the Woof" to get money for a local student who needed a service dog.

Mayflower's Porter has a great colored head a flows well down the throat. Good strong flavor

Cape Cod Beer has a red that tastes a lot like the aforementioned Copper Ale. Their porter is also a good recommendation.

Locally, in the Montpelier area I've found a good collection at Bear Naked Growler on Route 2 by the bike path and Mr J's in Barre right next to Mr Z's pizza. It's a gas station with a big microbeer collection. Forget the chips, convenience items and other stuff-- just beer and wine.

Why don't we agree that the Hermitage appears to be a "REAL EXPENSIVE" ski area... now what kind of beer do they have?

Crotched has Henniker's "Working Man's Porter", ROCKET FUEL is a relabel of Henniker's IPA.

Unfortunately they pulled SHED Mountain Brown. Somebody realized that by taking the advice of regulars the bar had arrived at the happy status of all 10 drafts being beers with ABV 6.+. Sam Adams seasonal Octoberfest and Winter White being the most 'commercial' taps. They do change taps for variety, many good choices... but the Blueberry keg lasted thru the season & probably won't be back.

All the Miller's, PBR's and Bud family were in bottles. :'(

Joshua, care to comment on what the most popular brands were on the hill ? Keystone seems to be the brand I find most under the lift. There does seem to be a link between the quality of the empty containers dropped from the lift and the economy. ,,,but no Patron, Tanqueray or Single Malts under our lifts!

Couple weeks ago I bought a Woodstock mixed 12 pack. Normally their beer is "meh" but this pack didn't have a single IPA in it -- but had a Red, a Brown, a Pale and some sort of blueberry thing. The red and the brown are a real nice throwback to a few years ago before everybody went double milkshake hazy juice bomb triple dry hopped NEIPA.

Speaking from a limited sample size of about 4 friends who I have that were (and I am guessing will once again be) Hermitage members, whenever I've got a beer at their ski homes and/or out of their coolers, there always seems to be some Heady Topper and Sip of Sunshine, and one of the guys, pretty much always has some Treehouse or Trillium available.

The couple of times I was actually in their "Clubhouse" at the bar, seemed to be much more likely to find folks drinking Vodka, Bourbon and Scotch than beer! ;)

Bud Light cans are the most common that I find on the hill. PBR is in second place. Also seen is a lot of Corona Cans (not a joke). The number of nips bottles is growing with lots of variety in brands.

As is evident from some of the wrecks I've hauled off the hill, tossing a can worth a nickel (or even a dime or quarter) is the lessor of the many bad and often painful decisions made by drunk skiers.

I put it in the same category as a regional ski area - certainly better than most, probably in the same category as BMOM.

And you are right: Not only did I mean "ski resort", but "destination ski resort".

Never-the-less, that I created this level of participation in silly-season can't be a bad thing!

A few empties on the hill after midnight madness aren't really that bad, they give a few patrollers that want to go ski an excuse to get out on the hill and do something useful.

Also a lot of folks appreciate the fact that we do pick stuff up... It looks like we give a damn about their (and our) ski area.

LOCAL UPDATE. The Francestown General Store got licensed for beer & wine. Still working on food service permitting.
