Feb. 23, 2019 - Sat. 80 of 86 trails all 20 lifts. 3” in last 7 days. 30 degrees no wind, AM blue ski, high haze later. I skied gloveless most of the day. Well I finally got my butt up and did AM express. Got 4 off the Bluebird before 9. There was thin breakable crust on anything ungroomed. It was machined groomed on hard pack. Nonetheless conditions were good.
Looks like my evil plan worked as I didn’t see Rick B. anywhere and lift lines were shorter than last weekend. JK Rick.
The first chair stopped 5 times within sight of the summit. Maybe they are always out there but I noticed extra personnel on the Canyon and Sunbrook terminals when they had stoppages. Mechanics I think. The Sunbrook did the crawly thing on the first trip then the next 3 trips it was fine. Witnessed several human stoppages. A guy fell out of my chair on BB. A group fell out later there. Over at NF on the Challenger, they loaded a pasel of those cute 4 year olds from Snow Camp onto the lift. So of course they had to slow or stop the line lift for everyone of them at both ends. 2nd to last run on the BB a guy drops his ski at the base. I was on the far left and him 2nd from the right and I signaled the top liftie to stop but he still took out one of his friends and would’ve got me but I skied way out of bounds thru the crust & cones.
21runs 28.3k vertical. Not even half Joshua or Nelsbeer numbers.

They did a great job keeping things moving. The lifties were out organizing well, especially at the Bubble.

Yes I saw two girls break open a PBR on the lift at around 10 and share it.

Today it was a little sleet overnight, freezing rain left an eighth of an inch on the cars. Then it rained steadily all morning. They opened at 9 with just fixed lifts. North Face and Sunbrook and the Sundance Lodge ain’t opening. Still raining lightly. It poured for a while around 3pm. I’ve already skied twice in the rain this year so I’m good. Headed home early like just about everyone else in New England except apparently Dr Jeff.

Saturday 2/23/19

Saturday was very good. Crowds manageable. Went 7:30 to 1pm with a short coffee break at the Bull Wheel. 18 runs and about 20k of vert so a decent day. Didn’t even try on Sunday. Yuk.

Agree about Saturday. I did 7:30 until noon, got 13 runs and 20k vertical in all on the main face (hit the Northside singles line for the Bluebird about 11:20… the golden bubble went by just after I got in line…. The golden bubble went by AGAIN just as I was getting called out to join a group!! That was enough for me!!)

Sunday I made it out about 9:30… Walked from the ski club over to Discovery, rode up Discovery and traversed over to Ego, found out Ego just went on hold for icing… traversed over to Tumbleweed, rode that once, back to the ski club and then the Moover back to my condo and worked on de-icing the ¼″ plus of ice encrusting my car!! Basically just “checked in as present” on Sunday ;)

March 2nd. I think they groomed the whole place. Hop, Uncles, One More Time, Olympic, top of Ledge etc etc all groomed which was OK with me - made them skiable. Uncles was really good early on. The other typical groomed runs skied well. Ridge got scraped off fast - not the typical Ridge conditions. The North Face was good early on and deteriorated kind of quick late morning. I worked lookers right to left so skied Plummet last at about 11:15 - it did hold up fairly well to the traffic. Surprises were Fools Gold and Narrow Gauge on Carinthia later in the day. Mine Shaft was great too.

Skied AM express which started on Grand Summit but Blue Bird was up and running by 7:45. In all 7:30am to 1:30pm with coffee break - 20 runs 23k vertical.

They plowed Jaws and Free Fall flat too. Most of Sunbrook was kinda hellacious especially the Dippers which made the NF a relative joy in the afternoon. The ungroomed was 3” over rain ice which could be tricky, They said 77 of 86 trails but I skied 3 which were shown as closed on the report. The only trail I saw closed was Ripcord. 22 runs 26.8k

So, I probably should have mentioned that the upper stretches of the dippers were a complete joke. Lots of carnage unfortunately. I would say as unfortunate as the sunbrook area was - the non park areas of Carinthia were really good as was mine shaft - just to balance it out. I ended my day on Short Fuse under tumbleweed. It was short but after the entrance it was fun. I hang my hat on about of 250ft of vert to end my day.

Re plowing down moguls: Difficult decision/issue given increased skier density on the trails due to lack of new trails and increased uphill capacity. Management has to keep trails open and ungroomed trails can, from time-to-time, will be unskiable terrain.

The real money in skiing is not from the fanatics, but from the 10 to 15 day a year terminal intermediate skier. How many trails can the management reserved for the 3% who love big, steep, icy moguls?

I guess I am a 10-15 day back to terminal intermediate status after once doing the nasty stuff at MRG in my college days and 20 years ago at Jackson Hole

Just an old grampa now( 2nd granddaughter born this week) bringing total count to a half dozen

The reality these days is that on most weekends, Mount Snow needs to maximize it's available acregage to help with crowd congestion.

Sometimes that will mean that frozen solid ice bumps with a forecast not conducive for them getting soft enough for most mortals need to meet the fate of a groomers front blade and rear tiller....

I wasn’t complaining about flattened moguls. I completely understand why they do it. just stating a fact IMHO. I find Yardsale’s condition reports right on.
The top of Olympic was scraped clean except where six knuckleheads were stopped in a line on the edge on six piles where the only turntable snow was, looking for a lost phone. My friend fell trying to go around them and took a nice slide down a ways.

So Wednesday 2/27 was seriously icy. I didn’t have any problem, actually didn’t think much of it but my brother (who is not an aggressive skier) was mortified. South Bowl was extremely icy. Best skiing was on Thanks Walt I suppose. Canyon/Standard was pretty good too.

Returned on Saturday 3/2 although I didn’t ski, was too banged up. Family members said it was still oddly icy, although they felt Ego Alley was in great shape.

Seriously, extremely, oddly icy? The Sunbrook towers had remnants of 1″ thick ice still on them last weekend. Ego was nice Sunday when I finally made it down it. Conditions should be much improved now
