I went back to Killington on 10/1/93 and this time they didn't make snow on Boomerang and Upper Goat Path. This was because mountain biking was still going on. I went mountain biking in the afternoon after skiing.

BTW Joshua my question wasn't when Big Squaw stopped operating, my question was when it was added as "lost" on the Nelsap.org website. Jeremy was reluctant to do so, hoping that it would reopen. He's usually rather conservative about declaring a ski area as officially lost. In this case he waited until Feb 8 2011

First question: The earliest an eastern ski area has ever opened is Oct. 1 (1992, 3, 7) and two areas did so in the same year. No rocket science to know that one was Killington. Who was the other?

PS: Today is August 8. We are now closer to the beginning of the 2019-20 season than the end of the 2018-19 season!

I wouldn’t expect anyone to know this, and I don’t have any evidence, but when I was a teenager in the mid 70’s an early season snowstorm dumped 6” of snow and snow guns were fire up. The small beginner hill slope that sits at the summit ran briefly. It was October 1st.

Not aware of Brooks Dodge's shortcuts. I was thinking of a major resort, with a twisty trail that's less twisty today.

Based on your clue, I'm guessing that the trail is Nosedive at Stowe, but no idea who or when.

Correct, it was George Macomber in 1950, check out the first full paragraph on the rightmost column here.

Back in the day they used the natural turns as gates. It reduced the need for wooden gates, which were just long straight branches with a flag on top.

A number of New England areas have been regular competitors for first-to-open. Two of these areas are currently out-of-business. One actually won; the other tied Killington once (maybe twice).

What are the two areas?

Woodbury is correct and the reason I said "out-of-business" is that Jeremy has not moved it to the NELSAP list yet. Onset (IMO) is not out-of-business. But I must say: I am surprised newpylong hasn't got this one.
