Crotched Mountain 2019-20 Season

To my surprise, on April 11 (Apr. 12, too), the full T2B (Satellite Summit to Meteor) was still skiable although there were a lot of narrow spots. Velocity is only available from the summit to Shooting Star. Galaxy and Pluto's are both good from Moon Walk and both end at Mountain Road (i.e.: at the bottom of Galaxy).

There were more hikers on the hill than skiers/riders. After seeing the quality of the skiing, a few of them indicated disappointment that they had not brought skis/boards.

Note: All conversations were held from accepted "social distancing standards".

I happened to check Trace the other day and saw you and some others are still posting vert. Most others stopped 3/14 or so. Any idea who the leader is? She's still racking up 3k+ days at Aspen.

Liz did about 7M vertical last year. As far as I know, she is not a youngster. I know how hard it is to do 2K of vertical climbing. Unless someone is giving her rides on a snowmobile or ATV, I'm not sure how she is consistently pulling off 3K+ days.

Interesting to compare last season with this season. Last year, 3M vertical got you to 22nd place; this year it gets you into the top 8.

Apr. 15, 2020 - Weds.
We're getting pretty close to the end here. No longer an unbroken T2B route. Pluto's is still skiable from about 100 vertical feet above Moon Walk to Mountain Road. It's a very nice 650' of vertical.

Today was the first day I didn't see anyone else on the hill during the time while I was on it. As far as I can tell, as long as one lives in NH, skiing on CM while maintaining "social distance" is consistent with the governor's order which allows for outdoor exercise.

I wound up skiing at CM today (4/18). 3.5" of new snow which has compressed and melted to about 1.5" by 2 PM. (Probably all gone by tonight.) Despite the new snow, the skiing was actually better earlier this week. Today. where there was base, it was nice. Where there was not, it was clumping and cruddy. If you hadn't seen the hill before the snow, it might not be obvious which was which!

I awoke today (Wed. April 22nd) and saw Crotched Mountain coated with fresh snow out my window. A few flurries were still falling. Looked good but it was really only a dusting. Didn't get a chance to check Solstice Glade.

As of yesterday (4/21), Pluto's was still fully skiable from about 100' vertical above where it crosses Moon Walk and Mountain Road (aka: Galaxy Crossover). Trace counts it as about 600 vert. There is a nice 200' mellow segment from the 4th snowgun from the top on Galaxy to its intersection with Solstice Glade. Meteor offered about a 400' vertical segment from just above the race shack to Mountain Road (aka: Galaxy Crossover).

Apr. 28, 2020 - Tues.
Pluto's at CM is still holding up well. New snow from yesterday was still quite pleasant about 1500' elevation. Still a nice 300 vert. on Meteor. Hoping for a few more days.

I was looking at Trace stats yesterday Chuckstah and surprised to see that with all the skiing you do, you are under 1M vertical. Do you not turn Trace on sometimes?

Yes. I don't always use it. I maybe have an extra 200,000 feet, but still under a million. Also, I was skiing at well under 100 percent for most of the season with a torn rotator cuff. I try to get at least one run per day tracked to keep track of days. Last year with a full season I was well over a million vertical.

Fun day today. The snow on Pluto's was a mixed bag of nice corn and chunky. Meteor was great corn the whole way, but the patch is getting shorter by the day. CM park is getting narrow with breaks. Saturday will likely be it for me, at Crotched anyway.

I took a couple of runs in the rain. The continuous skiable area on Pluto's is down to about 500' vertical. Chuckstah's description above of the snow conditions is accurate.

Since Crotched closed on March 14, I have earned turns on 23 days with as little as 400' vertical to as much as 2500'. While I hope it won't be necessary, but if the lifts don't spin next season, I can live with that. That being said, without machine-made snow, it will be a season like the 1960s pre-snowmaking years with a season of between 45 and 75 days.

May 2, 2020 - Sat.
The skiing wasn't that great. While there is still a 550' vertical path down Pluto's, there are two breaks of about 50 linear feet each. Unless Killington re-opens, today is my last day of this season. I was within 1K vertical of moving into 13th place on the SnowTrace app, and getting 1K or more today was my primary goal! Mission accomplished.
