Waterville is supposed to open Friday.

That is certainly going to be a stretch.

Dec. 3, 2020 - Thurs.
Someone walked over the remaining snow when it was really soft which really messed up the surface when it set up. While the 160' of contiguous vertical is still available, there were a couple of choke points. It wasn't that much fun - so I'm done until there is more snow - natural or machine made!

Dec. 6, 2020 - Sun.
Last night's storm dumped 15" to 18" at CM.
Snow guns went on at 10 PM last night and while I can't see from here, they may still be going.
I had 2-wonderful runs in Solstice Glade + one on the corduroy above it. I was exhausted! I will do what I have to do to ski, but I can't wait for the lifts to spin!

What a great base hope it doesn’t melt away.

Dec. 7, 2020 - Mon.
Snow guns continue on Meteor, Galaxy, Lower Magnitude (the park), Satellite Summit, Cosmic Blast and Moonwalk. Opening day is Saturday, Dec. 12.
The snow dried a little with last night's colder temps and the trails/glades without snowmaking improved today (compared with yesterday).

Crotched will open Saturday morning, as of a few hours ago the reservations system is accepting requests for the weekend and next week.
As of Wednesday the Crotched guns are silent and the ponds are sufficiently dry to deliver 50' more feet of vertical at the base.
The focus of the snowmaking remained on Moonwalk, Satallite Summit, Meteor, Galaxy, Magnitude etal,. Expect the trails that are open to have descent coverage.
Grooming sounds were coming from the upper part of the hill all day as the 🐋🐳 get pushed out. There are currently a few signs at the base CLOSED & NO UPHILL TRAFFIC ⛔, it is not uncommon to keep skiers clear of working groomers.
There are no official uphill traffic rules yet for the actual season.

Congrats Crotched. You got the most snow I've seen from that storm on Sat and deserve to be open.

Breaking news: Bennington, NH man arrested for trespassing while hiking up Crotched Mountain Vail properties to ski glades.
Seriously, thanks for the report Nels

The Boston Globe, in an article dated December 3, 2020 titled, "What to expect on New England’s ski slopes this season of COVID" says:
"Vail Resorts, which owns seven mountains in New England — including Okemo and Stowe in Vermont and Attitash, Wildcat, and Mount Sunapee in New Hampshire ..."
Crotched Mountain is not even mentioned in the article. It appears we are in good company since Mount Snow gets no mention either!

That has changed:
https://www.crotchedmtn.com/the-mountain/about-the-mountain/mountain-safety.aspx
Basically no uphill traffic during operations. It's allowed 30 minutes after the mountain closes until 8:45 AM. There are other rules spelled out there too.

Hopefully not
@joshua_segal's idea of descent coverage :)

Ted: I skied Solstice Glade on Oct. 31 with 3" of natural and didn't put a scratch on my skis. True: It wouldn't have held up to a lot of traffic - but I don't want the other SJers to think that I am crazy (well, at least not too crazy :D )

Dec. 10, 2020 - Thu.
Unusual to have 4-powder days in a row this early in the season, but Sunday's storm is still not skied out and temps have remained below freezing. My 3-runs for today: Velocity, Comet Drop and Final Frontier. I stayed on the west side because they are neither making snow nor grooming over here.
In the old days (1960's), the mountain would have reported, "Powder and Packed Powder on a 2 to 6" base; good to excellent", 23 of 25 open trails. In the snowmaking/super-grooming world of today, they won't even consider opening the terrain without machine-made snow with this much snow to the public!

I enjoyed hosting that event and it was good to meet you all face-to-face.

Ted, good to see the uphill policy in place, people always look to patrol for these type rules.
It appears there is a reasonably good flow of water off the hill, they are pumping water to the snowmaking pond again, hopefully enough to get more trails open when temps drop.
Groomers are pushing out whales on the lower part of the hill. Looks like there will be lots of courderoy for opening day.

Opening day (Dec. 12) was good. I thought the crowd and the staff did a good job of maintaining social distance and wearing masks. The snow was good and after a lot of earned turns, it was nice to relax on some groomers.
