What are some of the best small mountain ski towns that come to mind...The greatest example in my eyes is Ellicottville with Holimont and Holiday Valley rising out of the village. All 700-800 vertical feet. What are some other great ski towns that come to mind that the ski resorts maybe don't measure up?

One that quickly comes to mind is Woodstock with Quechee & Suicide Six.

E'ville-- the drinking town with a skiing problem.
Treilly
I agree that Ellicottville is a great ski town. It looks like the trails of Holimount end in peoples backyards.

You don't get more downtown than Cranmore.
If they ever put a lift in to the top of Arrowhead, Claremont, NH might make that list.
I don't think you can walk from downtown Woodstock, VT to either Suicide Six or Quechee.

Jackson, NH and Black Mtn ski area
Santa Fe, NM and Ski Santa Fe
Bozeman, MT and Bridger Bowl ski area
Davis, WV and Timberline Mtn (alpine), Canaan Valley (alpine), and Whitegrass (nordic) ski areas

Ski towns aren't necessarily within walking distance of a ski area. Bethel is constantly ranked among the best ski towns in North America, yet it is not within walking distance of Mount Abram or Sunday River. On the same note, I don't think North Conway is a small mountain town because it is the ski town associated with many of the large White Mountains ski areas.

Jackson NH seems to be about as cool as a small ski town can get, but is it a small ski area town?
When this thread came along I thought the 700-800 foot thing was the upper limit, so I didn't think to mention Jackson or North Conway. Especially Jackson with Wildcat being right up the road, Black at around 1000', and Jackson XC being a world class operation.
But if it does qualify, Jackson has North Conway beat if for nothing else but the traffic! Nowadays even the workarounds and bypass roads are clogged thanks to these stupid smart phones. Used to be you had to know them, or at least be able to read a map.
Plus Jackson has Nestlenook Farm, which is a much more scenic skating area than the plywood rink in North Conway.
Jackson also beats North Conway for not having those absurd shopping outlets and a walmart, with a bunch of morons trying to navigate the circles on North-South Road.
North Conway also has property taxes that rival New Jersey's. No thanks.
On the other hand, North Conway gets props for having a ski museum, lots of awesome restaurants, a lot more services than Jackson, and a cool downtown.
Bethel Maine is definitely cool and getting cooler -- the mineral museum is off the charts awesome -- but is it a ski town?
Then again, is 1000' a disqualifier?
Request ADKskier to please define.... :) :) :)
Also be fun to have a "dumpiest ski town" thread. Rumford anyone? ;)

I don't understand the original prompt...

I'd throw in Leadville, CO. Ski Cooper is only 1,200' vert (which is big in this thread, but tiny in CO). Ski Cooper's clientele are mostly Leadville working class who live there specifically to be in the heart of the mountains while not being in center of CO tourism.

Farmington, ME with Titcomb and Woodstock, VT, but I might be biased.

I guess a lot of people stay in Waterbury--- does that make it a ski town?

Besides Ben and Jerry's, is there anything in Waterbury?

The Alchemist Brewery used to be in Waterbury. Now it's next door in Stowe. Pick up "Heady Topper". Purchase as much as allowed by law. Bring it to me. Your efforts will be handsomely rewarded. :)

I would also recommend 14th Star's Valor Ale...
For feces and laughs the other day I bought a 4 pack of "Lord of the Rings Orc Piss Stout"--- purely for the can, but well worth it.

I'm liking Great Barrington, MA.

Ah, NOW I get it: best small-mountain towns, not small mountain towns... I would not call Waterbury a small-mountain town- most staying there are skiing Stowe, Sugarbush, and/or MRG. Good food to be had there, though.

Now THAT is something I have GOT to try, being the LOTR fan that I am. Do they have any Old Toby Shire Shandy, Lothlorien Lager, Inn of the Prancing Pony Pilsner, or Rivendell IPA? 😂😂😂

Isn't every town in Vermont small? Burlington population is under 45,000. Montpelier 8,000. ;)
