Old Forge, with McCauley Mountain should be on the list.
We were there in the summer, not winter so it may not be so great.
I'll second that. Only managed to make my way through there once, also in summer, and the town was bumpin' with activity and very attractive.
For the ADKs those of us who live in NYC tri state area tend to go up the thruway and then jump off on the northway. those who don't tend to go only a little further to the Amsterdam exit for Great Sacandaga Lake, Speculator (Oak) etc. I know a lot of people who vacation and ski in the ADKs and they've never made it to Old Forge.
