Sorry, back to the bitching. I get the no nights during the week, but nothing on Fri-Sat, and over the holiday's? That sucks!!!! And yes I get the employee shortage, as I worked many a 8am-10pm or 3pm-4am shift over the last years so that they could stay open at night. Getting rid of the 3am stuff was fine. But no nights at all for Dec is BS, especially after selling so many season passes. Will no nights from Mon & Tues for rest of the year be far behind? :s

After the same complaint on the other "Vail" thread, I posted the following:

I am going to defend Vail's decision on this one:
1. At this season of the year, if it is warm in the day, the snow firms at night and the skiing can become dangerous.
2. At this season of the year, if it is cold enough to make snow, most customers do not like skiing thru snow-guns that are operating. At this season of the year, snowmaking is needed and closing at 5PM gives them 4-extra hours.
3. Night-skiing crowds in December tends to be very light. Things like after-school programs and "beer league racing" start in January.
4. Do you know how hard it is to find employees to cover all these hours? This is an industry-wide problem.

I suspect nights are safe. Once January rolls around, the after-school business will carry the night skiing.

We (at Whaleback) did not start night skiing for all of those reasons until January.

Joshua, I get want you are saying. But as a paying customer, I bought my pass with the assumption that I would be able to ski at night during December as this has been the case for the past 10+? years. Now, with no real notice, just a blurb in the snow report, they have reduced the benefit of the pass by cutting 20 nights of skiing time. No I would not have skied all 20 nights, but definitely would have made 5-10 as I need to get my ski legs back after only 5 days out last year.

It's also just a slap in the face the way they implemented it, bad form Vail(and Crotched)!!

It was submitted that night skiing attendees are few pre-holidays and the time needed for snowmaking make night skiing operations difficult for ... well, any area.

I would say night skiing is also necessary. Many folks that work M-F 8-5 make attendance during the mid-week difficult if not impossible. Night skiing in some areas is more popular than day skiing. My profile pic was taken at Pat's Peak on a Saturday but as I was packing up at the end of the day the crowds coming in for night skiing were overwhelming.

If ski areas that operate at night want open rebellion, then yeah, it's a possibility but isn't attendance for everything light on Monday and Tuesday? It's alway amazed me that businesses like restaurants and theaters stay open those nights at all.

Hanging out at 'The Crotch' I have seen a lot of change in the few months since the GM replacement took place. Our new GM is a 'ski person' with 14 years at Okemo, not NH but close enough. She has an awareness of the ski industry, knows a ski area is a community and works well with everyone. So welcome Susan as a breath of fresh air.

All but a few fulltime workers were gone when VAIL gave the go ahead to start spending for the new season. They found enough experienced managers & supervisors to get things started but are still down a bunch of people. Don't be surprised if you see instructors or patrollers scanning tickets, directing AM traffic or shoveling a little snow until they backfill many positions.

Pre-season there has been a lot of shuffling staff & tasks to get things done, with more outside help than has been usual in the past. Paid patrollers built the new loading ramps for the PARK (now ROVER) triple lift & the West Double. Groomers (the PB400 type) were taken to Okemo for maintenance - they should be back for opening. A professional team was brought in to cut back the trail edges; Jonni's dad cut the grass (Final Frontier glade looks the best it ever has). Another team was brought in to grease the lifts and perform general maintenance on their running gear. The Crotched guys replaced the West upper bull wheel bearing with one outside helper. Work on the snowmaking has been ongoing. Earlier this week they pulled the new cable on ROVER(Park), it is short so maybe they can get it stretched, spliced and ready for chairs by weeks end? 🚋

Inside the base lodge has been cleaned as well as possible. Vail Food Service works on a central structure with multiple areas supplied & managed by a dedicated team. There is a rumor of some new dining room furniture & tv monitor type menus. The BAR will open😊. Judging by what I saw at Sunapee last Friday the starting menu will be very simple: Hot Dogs, Burgers, Fries, Chicken Tenders, Soup/Chili, pre-made sandwiches and the usual beverages. It will grow from there. Vail really missed the food and beverage income last year so they should be out to earn it back now. Still NO CASH, credit/debit cards only. New picnic tables & an outhouse are going on the back deck for the unvaccinated.

Maybe once Crotched is open and they know how many people are going to show up daily they can look at the schedule and match Pat's Peak - 9 to 5 daily until Christmas weekend's 9 to 9. (My suggestion, not based on any rumor). There is a real undercurrent of wondering how many people will show up opening weekend & Christmas week🚗🛺🚜🏍🚕🚓🚑🚒. Parking is still FREE!

Am I to understand that if your not vaxxed, your only option to relieve yourself is in an outhouse on a deck next to picnic tables?

Not to worry, there are still downstairs restrooms and warming areas available to everybody, that would be a masked area.

The signage is not updated yet but if it is consistent with Sunapee the vaxxed area in the upstairs dining room would be for people who have their shots but need to remove their masks to eat. Separate non-vaxed food service and dining areas were provided at Sunapee.

I thought they were only needed to get in a fast food line? That’s a 180 or a 270 or something, from what they originally stated.

I'd guess you went in the wrong door if you just wanted the RR. The door nearest the boot works is an express lane to the loo. But if you wanted food, then yes.

I skied today 11-1pm - not bad considering the monday event.
