NELSBEER
This evening Crotched's website announced that they will not be opening this weekend as planned.
The entire crew made a mighty effort to get everything done but there was too much remaining to be done and not enough time or people to complete everything.
Today they spliced the New Haul rope on the triple, they still need to get the chairs on and get it inspected. There is a lot of missing safety signage in the base Lodge and some new furniture to be installed. The bar is almost ready to open as well.
Meanwhile at least Sunapee isn't too long a drive from here.
Snow making has been running for 2 days and there is still plenty of water hopefully we'll have more trails ready next week.
NELSBEER
After Saturday's rain I can't say they were unwise not to groom out the hill as a lot of rain fell. The whales they made last week remain on the hill and are ready to groom out when they are ready. A little cold weather and some natural stuff on top would really help.
The main snow making pond is totally full at this point and the lower pond is down less than 2 ft from the top. With the extra time things have come together better around the area. Putting the chairs on the triple is the most evident thing to be completed which shouldn't be too hard given this week's forecast.

There is more than adequate snow to be open. I took two runs today and it was quite pleasant except for avoiding water-bars that haven't been groomed out.
First run was Moon Walk to Meteor; Second run was Galaxy to Lower Meteor.
I was surprised to see no one working on the hill today considering the weather was beautiful and perfect for outdoor work.

Then why don't they open?

I think they saw Saturday's weather forecast, but I really don't know.
That being said, it takes more than snow to operate a ski area.
NELSBEER
Judging by the activity we saw all week the staff may just have taken Sunday off cuz they were all beat. I expect we will see renewed activity tomorrow. Still need lots of people.

It looks like they may need to increase wages, maybe significantly, if there is not enough staff to open. I'm getting used to the drive to Sunapee. There seems to be oodles of staff there. Last Monday there were about a dozen folks skiing, and at least double that working, probably more.

The "winter" that should never be named.

Looks like some work being done on the rocket today.
NELSBEER
I checked by the base of rocket they were using the excavator to hold the cable clear while they replace some shiev wheels on the base tower. Like we always suggest here, the excavator is our big Leatherman tool.
Ponds are both overflowing but temp. Is 50.

Unfortunately, the current snow report is completely worthless. It would be nice if there was some kind of current status.

As far as I know, the local area has no control over the web-site. That being said, I've been posting the condx regularly!

Do you mean that Crotched cannot post their own snow conditions and that they have to have Colorado do it for them?

From the home page:
OPENING DAY DELAYED
Sorry, Crotched Mountain skiers and riders – while we were hoping to hit our target opening date of December 10, so much is up to Mother Nature. It looks like we will be opening just a bit later than planned this year.
Check back for updates. We hope to open soon!
Once the mountain opens, there will be a snow report. Until then, try the home page or facebook.
IMO, complaints about every little nit are growing old.
NELSBEER
The web activity seems to all come out of Broomfield Colorado: must be dependent on people calling him up and helping them. For now enjoy the scavenger hunt and look forward to Vail owning and reporting on two Hidden Valleys, we'll let you know when Crotched's opening.

Ok, no complaints about the mountain today. ;) I was looking at the current forecast for the possibility of 6" of snow in the area for Sat, and realized that according to my records, we have had only one storm with 6"+ snow in over 10 months in SW NH, and that was on April 15th after Crotched had closed. Before that we have to go back to Feb 2nd when we got 11". This is just crazy, and along with the lack of cold snowmaking weather so far this season, it's no wonder why I am so freaking grumpy! Let hope that this pattern changes really soon, starting with Saturday!

Caught Joshua again this morning. Any news from management? Are they aiming at the 24th at this point?
