Black Mountain of Maine 2021-2022

Five of us skied Black on Thursday. All groomed trails were PP. Ungroomed trails and glades were difficult to ski. I went down a trail as the patrol finished removing the rope. The snow from Monday’s storm was dry but heavy. My guess is the wind caused that. The glades I tried had fine cover but were difficult to make turns. As skiers and riders broke up the snow, those trails and glades became fun to ski. There was a modest crowd for LL Bean Thursday ($15). The top of the summit ride was windy part of the afternoon. It was a fun day.

It's worth noting that they used an old school powder maker to open up Allagash and Saint John.

I think these are very useful with a thin base. With a power tiller, if you don’t have at least a 6” base, the teeth will hit ground or rocks. Powder makers or even the old rollers pack new snow and/or break a thin crust.

I agree. In conditions like we currently have on Allagash, it does an excellent job.

It's another day of excellent conditions! It's very similar to yesterday, except a bit warmer. There's a race happening today, so the lodge is quite crowded, but lift and trail crowding isn't an issue. The new hang out spot in Saint John Glade is very nice, and is a good alternative to the lunch rocks off of Allagash.

Did a couple hours with Trackbiker at Black on thursday and have to say it had the best conditions we encountered all weekend. It was like having a private ski area in Colorado.

I agree. Conditions on the groomed trails were great. Really enjoyed skiing the area and the vibe. Looking forward to skiing there again.

Here we go! There are only a few inches so far, but it's coming down hard and it's a light and fluffy snow. The mountain is already 100% open and most glades are skiable. This snow will put us in mid-winter conditions, and the skiing should be amazing tomorrow! The T-bar is bring prepped to open and should be spinning any day now.

We ended up with about 10-12 inches total from the storm. The wind has blown it around a lot, so it's thinner on most trails, but quite deep in the woods. The skiing is excellent across the mountain, especially in the glades. It's quite busy, although lift lines are still minimal. I was able to catch a few runs with Rocket21 and Brianna today as well!

I made it out to do a sidecountry run down Mousam and Ducktrap today. It was absolutely stellar with deep powder and plenty of untracked lines.

February 2

The T-Bar is open!! We had warm weather and a great turnout for tonight's free ski and tube night. All of the night skiing trails were open, and there was time to ski unlit trails and glades before it got dark.

There's a light facing each way on that pole. It does get a bit dark a little higher up, but it's not terribly bad.

Bummer, would have been nuce to meet you. Made it to lunch without a drop of rain. Awesome place you got here! Not hitting as many rocks as we were in VT, but one managed to snap my pole. Doh!

Really, really nice looking!!
That ain't nothing for darkness, ayuh. Now I took some spins at Lyndon one night and two thirds the way up it was pitch black. Kinda scary then kinda kool.

There are plenty of leftovers from the 15" yesterday, and the skiing is likely the best that it's been since 2018-2019! The glades are really where it's at today, and there are many untracked lines to be found. Moxie, Bagaduce, and Saco have all received a groomer pass in the sidecountry. It's quite busy and the lines for the triple are sometimes reaching a couple minutes long, but the trails are not crowded at all.
