Only when the have to.
Sam,
It appears that you take great joy in hating on any area bigger than BMOM. I, for one, would like for you to give our SJ community a list of 5-areas with vertical greater than BMOM and less than 2K vertical that you really like as much as or more than BMOM!
However, that is an interesting question, so I'll answer it anyways. My list of 5 would be Tenney, Cranmore, Magic Mountain, Owl's Head, & Bolton Valley.
Do you have criteria for selecting these? I have skied Owls Head once in 1978 and have no recollection of the area. But the rest are fine places to ski, but Tenney has no infrastructure, no grooming to speak of and is barely open. I've put my cards on the table as to why I chose my list on another thread. Other than being off the beaten path with smaller crowds, what is it you like about these places?
They aren't necessarily my favorite places to ski, just my favorite that fit your criteria. They generally have interesting terrain, are affordable, aren't very crowded (with the exception of Magic), and are places that I always look forward going back to. The outlier is Cranmore which is pricer, but I feel like they offer a very high quality product and experience for the price. I more or less see Cranmore as what Vail wishes they were, and if they could achieve that quality of operation, I certainly wouldn't be harping on them so much.
